On the other hand, he was facing the world's best bowling attack!Basil wrote:Dello wrote:Basil wrote:Ton up for Strauss - not his prettiest, but the gutsiest by a country mile. Well played.
Not sure about that - 5th Test against Australia at the Oval was pretty gutsy. We'd have been f*cked without it.
Well played all the same.
He wasn't playing for his career at the Oval

But he was playing for the Ashes against a far greater attack than he's been facing here.

OK, so all the batsmen have now done enough to save their spots . . . (except Vaughan) . . .

Baz - I'm a Middlesex and Strauss supporter - I've stayed up half the night just to see the man get his ton!Basil wrote:Merlin wrote:On the other hand, he was facing the world's best bowling attack!Basil wrote:Dello wrote:Basil wrote:Ton up for Strauss - not his prettiest, but the gutsiest by a country mile. That's the way it works with England. Getting by is the limit of their ambition.

I'm not sure that it's Strauss's most gutsy given how flat the pitch is and how feeble the kiwi attack is. Batsmen should be queueing up to join this party.

I was thinking that myself. If Bell had got out in the 80s he would have got slaughtered again for not making a ton. Yet his innings has been vastly superior to Strauss'.
Not that it matters now Sherm's got that elusive ton, and what a ton it's been. Well played that man.

Bell has played like God, which makes it all the more frustrating when he gets out feebly like he did in the first innings.

Bell's first ever ton in the second innings of a match. His 7th. It was a classy Pietersen style knock.

Except Pietersen scored his hundred when it mattered.
Very good quality knock - but every batsman in the world would be queuing up to bat in this situation: a spent NZ attack on a damage limitation mission on a flattie in blazing sunshine with a lead of 350 under your belt and Grant Eliott with the ball in his hand.
Good times.

And it's not only that the kiwis are knackered, their attack was severely depleted to begin with.

Averaging 61 in the series.
Next best is Colly (44).

Nice to see the Bellhop cement his place in the team. I really do believe he is way too good a player for us to give up on in his mid 20's.
It won't hurt if he's dropped for a bit to look at other players but to be honest I don't think too many in county cricket are more talented than him.

22 runs for Strauss to beat his highest score.

We should declare if we are about 470 ahead with 30 minutes or thereabouts to go. I don't think Messrs Bell and How would fancy Siders and Broad bearing down on them.

England will likely declare overnight, imo. Unless Vaughan wants to give Strauss 20 minutes tomorrow morning to try and get his double century.
