Dravid will go past Gavaskar, Kallis most probably will pass Lara. Ponting and Tendulkar to compete for the top spot.

It could be an interesting race between Kallis and Ponting over the next 12/18 months

I wouldn't be surprised if Kallis takes the record. He scores runs so innocuously(?), you don't think he'd be up there with the very best. But he is.

Ian Bell will rinse the lot of them by the end of his career. That much is surely obvious?

Seriously though, Cook, if he tightens up, could probably join the 10,000 club. Has the technique and the temperament to do it.

Re: 10 K
Assuming both Ponting and Tendulkar play till the '11 WC (or Ashes if they come later on in the year in case of Punter), who'd you back to score more runs?

Ponting - I think Tendy's best days are behind him and he seems to be getting more and more injury-prone. Whereas Ponting seems to be at the top of his game.

Who will top Ponting though? I doubt if KP will hang around long enough. I'll be shot down for saying this but Cook stands a chance - his technique is ok'ish now and should improve and he's young enough.

Re: 10 K
I don't know, there were a few signs that he was not his 'self' in the India series, also glimpses of it in the IPL, could be the start of a steep decline. Or maybe it was just a momentary lack of luck and Bush's evil nephew may actually start scoring runs by the bucketload again.

Re: 10 K
I think Ponting will want to bow out at the top of his game, can't see him playing much past 35.
Graeme Smith in with a shout of getting to the top of this list one day? Already 5,000+ runs at 27...

Also, Ponting plays for Australia, who over recent years have played more Tests.
What about some of the averages on this list, though ... is any stats-driven forumer prepared to argue that Ponting and Kallis are so far ahead of the other top run-scorers on this list, or that that Steve Waugh was really better than Border, and nearly as good as Gavaskar?

Re: 10 K
Seems to be a preference for grafting accumulators over flairy attacking batsmen in the top 8.
Maybe this approach allows longevity
Only Lara and Ponting bucking the trend. Tendulkar started out as a flair player too but gradually turned himself into a cautious batsman.

Re: 10 K
Tendulkar never really turned into an all-out grafter, it just wasn't possible. And recently he has been bringing all his shots out of the cupboard again, the pull, the hook, stepping out, slog sweep.

Well its obvious that the quality of pitches / bowlers in recent years have changed significantly.
Steve Waugh effectively replaced Border in the Australian team, and i think their similar averages are probably fair.
Ponting doesn't lose much by comparison to any of those batsmen, but has taken advantage of the more favourable conditions.

But there has been a noticeable change in his approach, the 90s Tendulkar would never have approached an innings like he did in for that double century in Sydney.
Lara and Ponting by comparison have relied on the same basic approach throughout their career.

If I had to choose one of those players to score a hundred to save my life, it would be Border - and bollocks to averages.
