How many Centuries will Pietersen end up with?

It's been bugging me for a while, but how many Test Match centuries do you reckon Pietersen will end up by the time he retires, which will probably be around ages 35-36 maybe even 37 if he's still going strong. Do a Robyn Smith and just carry on.

Thirty-five ish if he keeps on going as he has done and considering the volume of Test Cricket England play. Accounting for a dip in form and perhaps a late-career slump though, you'd think somewhere around 30 would be a safe prediction.

Id agree with 30. But his type of player tends to fade fast in the thirties, it seems to me that eye players always do.

I'm going to go against popular opinion, and suggest you've seen half his total already.

If he averages 4 or 5 per year as he has been, and carried on for another seven years until he is 35:

14 + (4 * 7) = 42 test centuries

So are we trying to say that Pietersen will be up there with the likes of Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting, and Border when his Career finishes in terms of Centuries?

Seems perfectly plausible, Ponting was no where near KP at the same stage in their career. If KP continues at the rate he is going then he should end up with at least 30, if he suffers a dip in form then mid-20s is more reasonable and if he continues to get better and better then 40 wouldn't be out of the question.

Who knows.

That would make him Captain Courageous indeed. Great start with the bat in his first Test as skipper, but it was a dead rubber. I'd like to see a few more outings when the pressure is on after a 3-21 start.

Still, he should be good for at least 30 tons in his career.

If he does well in India or get's picked to play Test cricket again, I personally reckon Vaughan can get around 22 centuries overall.

I was certain that Australia's top 7 in the early 2000s would all end up with 20+ tons.

Langer (23)
Ponting (35)
M Waugh (20)
Martyn (13)
S Waugh (32)
Gilchrist (17)

Mark Waugh just made it after his form tailed off badly. Martyn pulled the plug with 2 or 3 years left under his belt and Gilly's form fell away a bit. So a good start to your ton run does not mean you'll end up with a pile of them.

Martyn's tally is hella disappointing given his talent.

Pietersen will get 30 tons minimum. 34-38 is my prediction.

Surely the talk of Ponting getting 50 test tons is now a distant dream?

Mark Waugh's tally is reasonably disappointing given that he had to play 128 tests to achieve that. Compare that to for eg., Greg Chappell's 24 in 87 against better bowling than Waugh ever faced.

I concur but if you listened to the wanking that went on by Channel Nine commentators re. MW over the duration of his career, you could be excused for thinking that he was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Indeed he was. MEW's pea-heart didn't help. I remember him answering "softer balls" when asked what he'd change about the game. Pretty but soft.
