Re: Is Steyn a one year wonder?
Steyn definitely has periods where he doesn't look like a great, but he has an ability to suddenly crank it up and rip out three or four wickets out of nowhere.

Without a suggestion of irony - Steyn would get into the England side - no other current Saffie would.

Morne would be the frustrating, Harmison-like guy on the fringes of the England team but never quite able to nail down a spot. Philander would tear up the County Championship and probably get a look-in on helpful pitches.

Surely Amla would give Trott a run for his money and AB would be thereabouts. If Steyn's the only definite it's a poor reflection on England's past two series against them as the Saffies were clearly superior.
And talking of irony, there certainly are some quality saffas in the poms line-up.

Yep, the Saffies clearly thrashed England 1-1 in their last series

The other two tests in the series were characterised by England being nine down fighting tooth and nail to survive. In the first one Steyn didn't play and in the second they were one bowler short on the last day trying to bowl the poms out as de Wet had broken down. Most neutral judges rated SA as the superior side perhaps just lacking the finishing power.

It's to South Africa's detriment that they lack the killer instinct, and to England's credit that they have the ability to fight and stay in matches, so one probably evens out the other.

Agreed but that doesn't take away from the fact that SA was the better unit in the last two series between the two. So my point was that it's not a bad effort given that only one of their players apparently could break into the England team.

Steyn is an absolute champ bowler - head and shoulders above any other in cricket at the mo..I think he creates wickets for his fellow bowlers by applying pressure in the same way that DK Lillee did

A perfectly rational observation was made.
At what point did I say he was shite?
I am more than happy to get into a contest of finding posts by people who have been proven wrong. Bring it!

He was hyped up like no other int'l fast bowler that I can remember.
Come on Ponts, you'd totally written him off!
Re: Is Steyn a one year wonder?
So Taips can reserve judgement on Philander after his incredible debut test. It took four fivefers in six innings before he changed his mind on Philander.
I saw Steyn for one test and said he disappointed me. After having seen him more, the guy is a true great. I still stand by what i said originally.

Ponts I was basing my judgement on Philander based on the crap I saw him bowl in ODIs. Steyn had a pretty useful record before that tour.

TBH, I thought it was more of a final judgement, I 'sensed' it between the lines in what you wrote
Re: Is Steyn a one year wonder?
I'm surprised that Ponts doesn't understand ngamish by now

Aye, he should know I'm a between-the-lineser... I could sense the combination of mirth, disdain and pure unabashed hatred eminating from his post. He was ready to 'go shotgun'.

I don't think he's quite the bowler now that he was two years ago, but he's still a damn fine bowler.
I blame the IPL.
