Why do British people carpet their bathrooms?

The other day at Tai Chi a visit to the amenities revealed that the middle cubicle had several rolls of paper while those on either side had none. I was already comfortably seated when the reason for this anomaly became clear: A huge spider on the door. Needless to say I didn't spend the rest of my stay catching up on my reading.
