Skull tried serious analysis early in his career ...and failed ...his only purpose is to let rip with stupid jokes and show off his asthmatic hyena impression

They're welcome to him - what a spanker he is. I used to live in Roebuck Close in Weston-super-Mare, hopefully they've renamed it by now......

Aussie accent? He still sounds like a stereotypical English snob to me. Perceptions ...
Either way he's held in contempt in both hemispheres, because he's a complete qunt.

Re: Peter Roebuck
JKL. Roebuck still sounds very much like a Pom. His accent may have softened over the years, but it's still far more English than Australian.
It's quite funny how neither country wants to be associated with him.
O'Keefe actually does a lot more serious analysis than he is given credit for. I was listening to the ABC commentary for much of the Gabba Test and he was often very insightful. He had the balance between critic and clown about right I think.
At times in the past he has gone somewhat over-the-top with the comedy. Sometimes it could be galling, but at other times it's been pure commentary gold!

Sort of like Tony Greig, but Grieg has 3 countries that have disassociated.

KOK's laugh can grate but he is actually well informed about cricket and in particular players' strengths and weaknesses when he gets around to discussing them. Would prefer him to the nasal-toned Lawson any day.
Quite like Alderman when the test is on in Perth as he takes no prisoners. And Hughes can be good for some lunacy value.

I didn't listen to any of the radio commentary during the first test. Who do they have behind the mic? I assume Aggers, Jim Maxwell, O'Keefe, and Spanky. Who else? Boycs? Vaughny? Fleming?

He's got plenty of faults, no need to make stuff up.
KOK doesn't take himself seriously, probably good advice to follow.JKLever wrote:What a qunt Kerry O'Keefe is btw,...

Sorry, sounds positively wallaby to my ears. Can't say i've ever heard a pom accent like that.
Some parts of south east Essex sound positively Aussie sounding but he's from nowhere near there.

Apparently once you leave your native country after a certain age, you'll always retain at least traces of your mother tongue. It's partly to do with the development of the vocal chords etc.
I heard Lamb on 'INside Cricket' the other night and despite all his years in England, he still sounds more saffer. KP can try as much as he like to sound more English but he still sounds pretty much saffer as well.

I don't think it's anything to do with the vocal chords. Some of Britain's top actors can do excellent American accents (Hugh Laurie etc), but your theory would suggest that his vocal chords physically wouldn't allow him to do such a perfect imitation of the accent.
I think it's more to do with getting to a certain age and not feeling like you have to adjust the way you talk to fit in with those around you. Ie, being confident in who you are, where you are from, and how you talk.

Re: Peter Roebuck
From my experience, many Poms are hopeless at detecting where accents are from. I've been asked by English people over the years if my accent is South African or Kiwi as often as Australian.JKLever wrote:Sorry, sounds positively wallaby to my ears. Can't say i've ever heard a pom accent like that.
Having said that, Yanks are worse.
Spanky has a hybrid accent these days. As does Greg Norman FWIW, he sounds like an Aussie to Yanks, but a Yank to Aussies. Maybe Roebuck is (appropriately) an accent equivalent of Bob Cunis, neither one thing nor the other.

I'd say true (and he's constantly too short), bit harsh (but he does look a straight up and down bowler in these conditions), and fair enough, given that he turned up at the Gabba as the world's number two bowler and proceded to lob down filth.

All you colonials sound the same to us...
I know loads of people who have what would be termed an English Estuary/Home Counties accent who have gone on hols to Seppoland and get asked if they're Australian.

Last time I was overseas I was typically asked by Germans whether I was from England ('feck off'), America ('I'm really starting to dislike you'), Canada (''rolls eyes'), Spain ('Que'?) or Sweden ... so perhaps, perhaps, some Germans are even worse than the English at detecting accents.
There is no place in Australia where Roebuck's voice would not be identified instantly as being NOT of Australian origin. JKL: youse all must just be utterly useless at accents.

There is definitely an Aussie inflection in Roebuck's voice, at least to a Pommie's ears. I know several people who spent a year or so in Oz and returned with a faint accent - they now talks proper like wot I duz.
