Re: Australia v England, 5th Test, Sydney, January 3-7, 2011
As regards Hilf, he missed loads and was lucky. Agree about Jimmy A as nightwatchman. What possible gain is there for England really? And Colly can almost be seen as just a high-class nightwatchman anyway these days, but at least with the possibility of scoring runs reasonably quickly and keeping it going. Still, at least Jimmy didn't get out I suppose.
If Oz's tail end runs had been shared among their top order I don't think we'd be at all disappointed with 280. It's just annoying to think that we could've been ahead by now. Not sure which bit of the night to use for sleeping tonight.

Mine's in my throat. Am I a freak?Gary 111 wrote:Went to bed at lunch - how the fark did Hilf get 34? Was already the worst 14 I think i've ever seen at the break. The only times he didn't look like getting out were when he was defending the ball with either his adam's apple of his groin. Which Tony Greig seemed to think was his 'back thigh'.

Gary was being euphemistic and complimentary about Hilf's testicles, eh.
They can't touch you for it.

One thing England need to cut out is that extremely camp touch of hands after someone does a half decent bit of fielding.
It looks good when scantily clad female beach volleyballers do it but not when your nations cricket team does it. Cut it out lads.

Anderson will either hang around for an hour and slow the scoring rate right down, or just give a wicket and momentum to the opposition straight away. Surely Colly could do the role of protecting the established batsman, it's not like throwing KP in there with a couple of overs remaining.
There's a time and a place for the tactic, but I think it's when you're batting in poor light and the ball's moving about all over the place and one of your openers has just gone cheaply - not when you're trying to drive home an advantage.
The nightwatchman should be a guy who is capable of scoring test 50s and has a couple of shots in his armoury. Tremlett or Swanny would be better suited to the role than Anderson, who does nothing but kill momentum the next morning.

Perhaps the bookies are basing their odds on the fact that apart from a freak Hussey/Haddin partnership at Brisbane, Aus haven't scored 400 all series.

skully wrote:Ugh, yesterday was a microcosm of the whole series. Aus batsmen playing impatient, impetuous shots after doing the hard yards, and then the bowlers bowling poorly to very confident English batsmen.
Still, a couple of early wickets this morning and this one still might turn into the only competitive Test of the summer. It'd be nice to see a tense one that could go either way going right into the final session.
this series pales into comparison with the Saffies v the Bannies...Despite the wondrous Spiv batting lineup we have fielded, I expect the bangles and the snoozies would give us a run for our money atm...that the pomgolilans have lost a match and been in the odd spot of bother at various stages in other games suggests they are a pretty avarage team..
In any Ashes series, winning or losing is a big thing, but in my memory I cannot recall a series where there has been a very poor team (despite the wonders of the spiv batting lineup) and an average team (pomgolians)...
is this the most low low rent series ever???

vilks - put aside the deserved result for your team...do you really think this has been a great ashes series?

Hilf hooping it around - got a bad feeling about this...

The ball is swinging loads. Jimmykins could do with being a morning watchman too.
Saying that, lovely cover drive there.

Gone. Full and straight. That's how you bowl to tailenders.
Anderson lets everyone down again. He PROMISED double figures.
It's Colly time. This'll be ugly. And maybe short-lived...

Jimmykins goes. Right then Colly - surely you have another 75 off 241 balls left in the tank yet....

A nuggety nudge through point.

Or Colly could go the other way and play his shots ODI style.

A puncy clump though cover.
Collingwood 5 not out. He needs 10 more Test runs to be better than Bill Lawry.

Collingwood tickles one round the corner with his left hand. Nasser 'popadom fingers' Hussain wouldn't have been able to do that and carry on.
Collingwood 6 not out.

Nasser played with such low hands, that one would have hit him on the shoulder.

Cook has overtaken Sir Geoffrey in 1970-1 as the most prolific England batsman in an Ashes series Down Under since WWII - 3rd most prolific of all England batsmen in Australia and scorer of most runs since Wally Hammond in Chapman's series of 1928-9:
