The new Australian captain
OK, Clarke has been given the gong. It may be for just one Test, it may be long term. Probably will be long term.
Given that he won't have the advantage of starting his captaincy stint with several all time greats at his disposal, where should the bar be set regarding how his performance should be judged?
I suspect he'll make his predecessor look like a cricketing intellect of Einsteinian proportions.

Re: The new Australian captain
Doesn't he need to make some runs first? He can't be guaranteed a spot in the side for much longer if he keeps failing with the bat.
One half century in his last 11 innings.

Re: The new Australian captain
It doesn't seem to work like that any more Trev. We've gone to the old England system of naming a captain first, then picking the team around him. Not sure when it started, but it may have been when SRW said he would retire at the end of a series that had not at that stage started.

Re: The new Australian captain
hmmn..as I said elsewhere I wish him well...the only thing in his favour is that he is not katich, slaw, watson or haddit...
I believe that Aust cricket has hit a new all time low...eg that some commentators have raised the captaincy prospects of watson is confirmation

Re: The new Australian captain
Just had this emailed to me. It's a link to some cricket fan site, where you can get wallpapers for your PC that pay tribute to 'your favourite cricketer'.
Here's the link: http://www.thecricfanclub.com/wallpapers/michael-john-clarke-wallpaper
And in case you can't be arsed looking, here's the picture for Pup...
Yep, pay tribute to him by spelling his name wrong. I love it.

clarke and ponting are capping a side that is only good for flooging KFC to fat kids whose future is diabetes, loss of limbs, sight and early death

Re: The new Australian captain
Clarke has nothing like the public support and respect that Waugh and Ponting had even before they became captain. He has a long way to go to earn the public's respect. Many people see him as a cashed up bogan who will do anything to obtain fame and fortune as he burns around Sydney's Eastern Suburbs in his Ferrari, and is too busy being on every second commercial on TV rather than knuckling down and concentrating on making runs for Australia.
In short- He is not very well liked and is seen as a fair-weather soft c*ck.
A few poor results and him not making many runs could mean his captaincy is short-lived. The public backlash will be too great.

Nielsen: Now, Ricky, what can you tell us about the man you saw last night?
Ricky: He's Caucasian.
Michael: Caucasian?
Ricky: Yeah, you know, a white guy. A moustache. About six-foot-three.
Nielsen: Awfully big moustache.

Tattoos are so farking 19th century. I know Grandmothers who have them. But every dickhead twenty-something sports star seems to think they're part of the uniform and "oh so, I'm a rebel". If I had a buck for everyone in the Western world without a tattoo I couldn't buy a cheeseburger at Maccas.
