Re: The best of all time in each sport
Gareth Edwards is my girlfriend's cousin...
I'm going to stick my neck out and say that I can't believe that Taips called Pele one dimensional but I am probably about to be called out for NSR.

Relax Vilks. I was just carryimg on my theme of saying you cannot pick a best of out of a team sport. I have it on good authority that Pele was sh!t in goals.

I'd probably go with Usain Bolt as the best sprinter of all time. When you win the Olympic 100 metres by a margin of 6 metres, you're a bit special.

See, now you are breaking it down again. Surely it has to be the best track athlete of all time.

Re: The best of all time in each sport
If he retired today he would definately have a good shout at it, it's ridiculous that if it weren't for him people would be lauding Tyson Gay as one of the greatest sprinters. 9.69 is a pretty spectacular time to run but Bolt makes him look slow.Henry wrote:I'd probably go with Usain Bolt as the best sprinter of all time. Re: The best of all time in each sport
Can't find the direct quote but I'm sure his manager said something like "We have the best goalkeeper in the world, the best defender in the world, the best midfielder in the world and the best striker in the world. Unfortunately, Pele can only play in one position at a time".taipan wrote:vilkrang wrote:Gareth Edwards is my girlfriend's cousin...

Can't actually find the quote so it is possible that I heard this in the pub and it's not true....

Surely longevity is important
I discounted Carl Lewis because he is a drug cheat

If longevity is important then Tyson shouldn't be up there with the greatest boxers. Had an astonishing start to his career but then got lazy and was a shadow of his former self.Paul Keating wrote:Henry wrote:I'd probably go with Usain Bolt as the best sprinter of all time. No way. Jordan has him covered. Kobe's career field goal percentage is around 44%. He scores a lot of points but he takes a lot of shots. Jordan's fg percentage was around 50%. Wilt Chamberlain was better than Kobe as well.
Every team these days basically has five Jordans in their team. Kobe is a god amongst men and still stands out.

Re: The best of all time in each sport
So every player in every team these days is a freakish super athlete who averages 30 points a game over a 20 year career and has almost single handedly carried his team to six NBA titles?

A young Schumacher used to beat Senna at his peak. Schu was a master in the rain and was at his best on street circuits (surely the hardest test of a driver)

Well it's a mistake as far as him being considered a great player is concerned. Even the greatest players need teammates who are at least competent. Terrific for his bank balance, though.

That reminds me of this great scene in "Coming to America"
Clarence: You must be out your goddamn mind! Joe Louis, the greatest boxer that ever lived. [to Akeem and Semmi] I'll be with you boys in a minute. He was badder than Cassius Clay, he was badder than Sugar Ray, and that new boy-what's his name? Mike Tyson?-looks like a bulldog; he was badder than him, too.
Saul: Vait a minute. Vat about Rocky Marciano?
Clarence: Oh, there they go. There they go, every time I start talkin 'bout boxing, a white man got to pull Rocky Marciano out they ass. That's their one, that's their one. Rocky Marciano! Rocky Marciano! Let me tell you something, once and for all--Rocky Marciano was good; but compared to Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano ain't sh!t.
Saul: He beat Joe Louis' ass.
Morris: That's right, he did whoop Joe Louis' ass.
Clarence: Joe Louis was 75 years old when they fought.
Morris: I don't know how old he was, but he got his ass whooped.
Clarence: Joe Louis had come out of retirement to fight Rocky Marciano the minute he was 76 years old. Joe Louis was always lying about his age. He lied about his age all the time. One time Frank Sinatra came in here and sat in this chair. I said Frank 'you hang out with Joe Louis, just between me and you, how old is Joe Louis?' You know what Frank told me, he said "Hey, Joe Louis is 137 years old." A hundred and thirty-seven years old!
Sweets: Oh. Man, you lying, you ain't never meet no Frank Sinatra.
Clarence: [points to Morris, Saul and Sweets] ****** you, ****** you, and ****** you! Who's next?!

Re: The best of all time in each sport
Nothing has been proven against Armstrong although there's clearly something fishy there as about five fellow cyclists have now come out and said he used drugs.
The truth will come out sooner or later, Armstrong will appear in front of the cameras in tears and apologise, and two years later he will be forgiven and be doing some sort of charity work. Happens every time......

Huh? Didn't Schu win his first title in the year that Senna died?

It doesn't really matter cos everyone rates Merckx as the best cyclist of all-time.
