What i mean is that the standard of all players in the NBA now is higher than 20 years ago. Every player is top notch. Obviously saying every teamhas five Jordans is a silly statement. But I still stand by Kobe being better

Huh? Didn't Schu win his first title in the year that Senna died?

I mean Schmu beat Senna in a handful of races. This is a young driver against a man at his peak

By that rational Pele and Maradona aren't anything special because in those days the standard of football wasn't as good as it is now.

Vettel is on his way. But his car is so much better than everyone elses, there should be an asterix next to his achievements.

Not at all. The standard of soccer has always been good. The standard of the NBA has always been good too. But the standard of the NBA now is incredible. Every player is a monster who can do everything. yet Kobe towers over all comers he comes up against.

Is Lebron James worse than Kobe? How about Dwayne Wade?

Football players run on average almost twice the distance that they used to in the 70s and 80s, the fitness levels are vastly improved as is the professionalism and general standard of play.

You guys make out as if Jordan wins hands down and Kobe does not come close. This is a debate that has seen endless airtime in the US and it is a lot closer than you think.

Of course fitness levels are better. What with nutrition and professionalism it is bound to be.

But in terms of pure skill levels, IMO it is not much better

Why so?

Well it's a mistake as far as him being considered a great player is concerned. Even the greatest players need teammates who are at least competent. Terrific for his bank balance, though.

Farque ...How great would be Bobby Skilton be remembered as if he hadnt played for South Melbourne ...

Indeed, Marciano, Sven Ottke and Joe Calzaghe are the greatest fighters of all time if we go on career records. Sven Ottke shouldn't be making anyone's top 100.

Ottke was up there, I rated him highly - probably not in a top 100 though. Calzaghe is way into my 100, teens or so. Underrated the other side of the Atlantic by many one-eyes - I've had the fortune in seeing many, as they have, but without a blinkered view. He was of the highest calibre.

That being the same Lomu who never won a WC and never scored a try against the Boks? Good choice.

WTF you need to win a WC to be considered the best?

I will go with Mark Ella or Eales

Well you have to achievesomething. Lomu didn't achieve much.

In his prime (1995-2000), Lomu was a player that hadn't been seen before, and hasn't been seen since. In other words, he was awesome. A 6 foot 5 winger with incredible speed and the power of a prop. It was almost unfair at times.

My outstanding memory of JL is of the 95 WC semi and final.

He scored 4 tries against us in the semi, and his marker - Tony Underwood - couldn't have been less effective had he been made of sponge cake. Lomu simply went straight through him, and I didn't give the Boks a hope in hell at stopping him at Ellis Park.

What a contrast in defence. Jamie Small cut him down attack after attack, and Lomu was effectively removed as a credible threat in the game. He hardly made a yard progress past Small the whole 80 minutes.

For me, three wingers as good as Lomu were Chariots, Billy Whizz and Campo.

Most boxing scribes would say Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest boxer of all time.

Ponts - Tyson? Get a grip. Perhaps the greatest misogynistic rapist of all time. Greatest boxer? Not even top 10.
