Any mining tax reforms alone would modernise a system that hasn't changed much since Federation and is in desperate need of a facelift. But no! The mining industry (and the Oz economy) may benefit from royalty/mining tax reform ...however the way that it has been handled in this case is farquing woeful

Rudd and Swan announce (with Zero consultation) the RSPT which is a complete joke (one of 3 out of 100+ Henry recommendations) ...Rudd gets knifed and Swan gets left out of the re-jigging consultation where the finance gurus from Rio , BHP and X Strata show up the amateur hour that was Treasury modelling for the tax ...they then allow the big 3 to tell them what the tax should be and they come up a solution that will stop any small players from becoming big players by taxing the living crap out of them if they look like becoming successful

They also didnt see the farquen obvious loophole that if a state govt increases their Royalties then the Fed govt refunds that out of MRRT to the miners....and now want to whinge because Barnett increased the Royalties on Iron Ore ...
