The 2011 Trivia Thread (III)
PeterCS wrote:One of Fingal-ton's anti-Saff tons in 1936?
PS: Wasn't he frozen out by the Don? Or alienated in some other way? This is just back-of-the-mind stuff.
They had their differences later on certainly, especially when Fingleton turned to journalism but they also shared in what was then the overall Test 6th wicket record of 346 against England at the MCG in January 1937. However on this tour, which was the season before, it was The Don, whose captaincy debut it was supposed to be, who was frozen out through injury and Vic Richardson took over the reins in his stead. Fingleton's partner was also to captain Australia but only once.

PeterCS wrote:Allan D wrote:PeterCS wrote:5) must be Hobbs & Sutcliffe - Capetown?
I am glad he left his last.
There are three references to Cape Town (but not all at the same ground) although H & S isn't one of them although the pair does feature. 5) is a more modern reference.
Didn't Sutcliffe - being a Tyke toff (well, upper middle clasaass) and debonair for the age - have some advertising contracts?
I thought "hob" was some sort of cobbler connection (not in Danny's sense), hammering nails into boots.
The references were purely to their surnames although one is a bit archaic - the occupation also involves horses as well as hammers. You've already mentioned him once. His partner has a surname that used to be a firm that manufactured a popular brand of toothpaste in the UK in my childhood but less so now. His forename is the surname of the man who discovered Uranus (although misspelt).

An even bigger Tyke legend than Sir Geoffrey. You've mentioned both him and his partner before in response to this.

As I said, his big stand with Hutton at Ellis Park in December 1948 just narrowly fails my self-imposed cut of 50.

Not Shrewsbury (hence "Shropshire capital") himself but one of his "lads", one maybe with Caledonian connections, at least nominally.
