Wrong fruit, ol' fruit.Allan D wrote:Not bananas I was thinking of, Skulls. My other favoured fruit in a cricketing context.
My point about your no. 12 entry is a matter of definition. I actually had it at no. 1 in terms of the largest margin between runs made for the 1st wicket and the team batting second's total.
And obviously knowing the answers is a major assist, but all of your clues are spot on and not particularly difficult to decipher. Nicely played.

His list is both accurate and well hinted at.

I see where you're coming from but I went by, as Cricinfo does, partnerships rather than wicket falls. There were actually 3 separate partnerships for the 1st wicket in this match. If they had got 6 more runs and gone past Mankad & Roy's then record it would not have been treated as an opening partnership for record purposes as 4 batsmen took part but I see I should have worded the question better.

Oval 1893
Aye.I once got ribbed unmercifully on this forum for saying he had shot himself "ironically"! What I meant was that it was not far from his greatest triumphs for Middlesex and England. It is curious how the two matches on the same ground, although 7 years apart, were so similar.:
1) 204 - V.H.Mankad & P.Roy (413/1) v. NZ (209), Madras (Chennai), January 1956
2) 159 - G.C.Smith & N.D.McKenzie (415/1) v. BD (259), Chittagong, February - March 2008
3) 131 - W.A.Brown & J.W.H.Fingleton (233/1) v. SA (102), Cape Town, January 1936
4) Most runs & most wickets come to the table
5)116 - G.C.Smith & H.H.Gibbs (368/1) v. Pakistan (252), Cape Town, January 2003
6) Top tonner & Tyke favourite give Yarpie runaround in Chamberlain hideout.
7) 102 - W.G.Grace & W.H.Scotton (170/1) v. Australia (68), The Oval, August 1886.
8 ) 90 - P.E.Richardson & M.C.Cowdrey (174/1) v. Australia (84), Old Trafford, July 1956.
9) 74 - G.R.Marsh & M.A,Taylor (329/1) v. England (255), Trent Bridge, August 1989.
10) 65 - J.L.Langer & M.L.Hayden (219/1) v. SA (154), SCG, January 2002
11) 60 - W.G.Grace & A.E.Stoddart (151/1) v. Australia (91), The Oval, August 1893.
12) An insect on vehicle gets a fruity delivery at rally's end
13) 55 - M.A.Taylor & M.J.Slater (260/1) v. England (205), Lord's, June 1993.

Only just, on the basis of partnership. Mightily so in the case of wickets. The rest obviously did both openers a bit of good!

Perhaps give it a footnote (noting when the 1st wicket fell) once Petey works out which insect is sitting on the kar.

Right first 3 letters - now added an aspirant stick insect and you're obviously correct! His partner should have been a bowler not a batsman if his surname is anything to go by!

The second bit is the hard part. This pair should have shown up at The Oval today. They would have been welcomed with open arms. It wasn't that long ago they were putting the opposition to the sword!
