South Africa v Australia, 2nd Test, Johannesburg, 17-21 November, 2011
Well.
Can Australia salvage some respectability after the Capetown Nightmare? Hard to see it with the mental dsintegration that will have followed that unbelievably pathetic performance.
Changes?
... no need for any changes for South Africa ... it'd be unfair to dump Tahir simply because Australia weren't good enough to force him to the bowling crease, and I can't see any of the batsmen needing to be altered unless there is an injury.
Australia: if Marsh's back spasms settle, he should play. If not, bring Khawaja in for him. Either way, Hughes must be on his 'last chance saloon'. Haddin might just as well regard it as his finale. I'd give both Cummins and Copeland a bowl and drop Lyon, but suspect they will keep Lyon and choose only one of the two quicks. It would have been interesting to see how Copeland performed on that last deck, with its lateral movement ... suspect anything he did he would have shat all over Johnson's performance. Johnson's file should be marked NTPFAA and thrown into the Mariana Trench, alongside that of Hughes. Just spineless.
I would NOT fly in any other players, just for one Test, in a series that we now cannot win in any case.

I think I might toddle over to Wanderers on Friday as Lardy seems to think the match will only last 2 days.

Cummins will probably play as we need to take wickets to force the win. Personally I'd piss off Midge but Cot is the likely victim.
Marsh is a risk so Ussie in. Maybe open with him to give Watto a break.

If that's the case then he'll get a century, in true Australia post 2008 style. I just pray he'll still be around in 2013.lardbucket wrote:Well.

Might have to support Australia in this one, or at the very least support the draw....

I reckon Aus will get tough on Johnson and give him the axe for Cummins. Pitch will be as flat as they can make it but there's always something in the Wanderers wicket.
This is a make or break test for both Haddin and Ponting.

That would be the logical move but our selectors don't have a good record with logic.
I reckon the side will be unchanged (unless mash is not fit). Afterall, the first game was a lot closer than people are giving credit for. If SA's tail had'nt gleened those extra few runs to avoid the follow on, the result may have been a lot different.

Hilditch's last Test match as selector ... with Cooley and Clarke.
Inverarity does not get involved until the new (home) season. I bet he's pleased not to have been involved with that last shellacking ...!

phurt....phurt....phurt...
Expect a shock selection of a new keeper to replace the haddit haddit...the new keeper has yet to make his first class debut but plays cricket all round Australia....Mr Wheelie Bin has a big mouth like all keepers and girth so wide that knocking down the odd Midge wide ball presents no problem...Bin does not have a great batting record but then the haddit haddit has forgotten how to make runs anyway...At the end of the next humiliation Midge, Fuse, Punter can be dumped in there and wheeeled forever away

CA needs to step in tell Invers and co to take over selection as of NOW
Forget about who is in South Africa and pick the X1 they want to be the basis of the team for this summer to be the team for the second test
Hughes must be axed
Haddin must be axed
If someone on the selection/coaching thinks Johnson is salvagable and wants to work with him full time...then retain him and if he fails the selector/coach goes too
Ponting should seriously consider retirement
Watson and Hussey should swap places
If Lyon is the long term option of the new selectors then play him ...otherwise play the spinner they want

I am not sure that the follow on would have been enforced.

Warner's done more than Bruce Francis to deserve a Test shot ... not much more, mind. They share the basic qualification.
