Some stats about Ponting
So he's averaging 58 and has 30-odd test hundreds. Let's boil that down a bit:
By the 55 test mark, he averaged 43.76 with 8 centuries. Very good without being great, sort of Graeme Thorpe territory.
In his 57 tests since he averaged a wopping 72, with 23 centuries, nearly one every two tests.
Did anything happen around March 2002?
Well, Donald retired from tests. Walsh had gone six months earlier, Ambrose a bit before that, and Wasim and Waqar were signing off too.
Over Ponting's latter 57 tests, thre were just three unquestionably world-class bowlers: Murali, McGrath and Warne. Ponting only had to face one of those three.
So it appears that his figures are flattered by an age of friendly bowling, and for that reason I can't rate him as highly as I do Greg Chappell or Border.

He's still the right side of rubbish, though.
Looks a decent player to me. I think he'll make it.
Re: Some stats about Ponting
This has been discussed loads of times but has never been resolved. There isn't really anyway to resolve it until some more world class bowlers come along.

Point.
The 2003-5 England attack had some potential but look what happened to them. There isn't really much else. Shoaib when he can be @rsed, Bond if he ever gets fit, Ntini in SA I suppose.

Now, of course, this is just Rob having a little sook.
However, Punter only averaged 36 with 3 centuries after 22 tests and that was in 1998-99. Seems his avergae has just kept increasing as he matured as a batsman.

So basically what you're saying rob is that if you average less than 70 after 2002 you can't be much of a batsman?

Now, here's a proper response to a thread about cricket. Are you saying that the mediocre bowlers were getting him out in his early days, instead of the good ones?

No, I think he was blowing your spurious argument out of the water. Probably because the rest of us realised you're a troll.

If you read my post you will see that I was wondering how Chappell and Border would do in an era where there is only one world-class bowler to face, compared to Ponting.

I'd say Zim said so and the rest jumped on the bandwagon.
