England v West Indies, 2nd Test, Trent Bridge, 25-29 May, 2012
Will Fat Brezzie's 1-144 and handsome duck be good enough to keep him in the Engulund squad for T2?

Shannon Gabriel's hurt her back and is going home.
Re: England v West Indies, 2nd Test, Trent Bridge, 25-29 May, 2012
With Tino Best replacing him... oo er!
Re: England v West Indies, 2nd Test, Trent Bridge, 25-29 May, 2012
Well shit a shit - Tino's back on our sunny (today) shores.
I had no idea he still played cricket at any recognised level.

Oh yeah... he's been pretty lively etc. so I hear. Not sure he'll get a game anyway, what with the brilliant Fidel Edwards, the skinny Ravi Rampaul and the world's best captaining bowler Darren Sammy to force his way through.
Re: England v West Indies, 2nd Test, Trent Bridge, 25-29 May, 2012
But how's his batting coming along?
Time at the crease until Swann or Jammy sledges him to "mind the windows"? Before he's faced a ball, I reckon.
England should get Matt Windows out on the pitch as a sub fielder. That'd f*ck with his mind. Maybe.

There's a whiff of "empty cupboard" about it, for sure.

Is there a more appropriately named player than Tino Best? Football can offer Rafael Scheidt.

Just peeked at the BBC headline and saw 'Best replaces injured Gabriel for Windies' and presumed it must be some young paceman. But Tino? Farquin'eck.
That's a bit like getting a 'Giles called up as cover for Swann' headline. Bit of a mindf*ck.

But Scheidt was shite. One's appropriate, the other's "ironically" named. If he'd been called Tino Worst...tricycle wrote:Is there a more appropriately named player than Tino Best? Football can offer Rafael Scheidt.
Usain Bolt is an appropriate name, as was George Best (who was apparently quite good...) In the latter category I think it's hard to beat another Jamaican sprinter, Steve Slowly!

Stuart Broad isn't the most appropriate name either given his build! Also Peter Bowler was a batsman...
On the other side of the coin there's racing drivers Scott Speed and Will Power, rugby player Damian Traille (pronounced "try") and of course Tiger Woods.

Was cricketer Doug Ring an arsehole?
Or Graeme Hole?
And did Crapp - c Hole b Ring ever happen?

No. Jack Crapp only played one Test (Oval 1948) with Doug Ring. No evidence that he ever went through him. Graeme Hole didn't make his debut until 1951 by which time Crapp had played his last Test (v. South Africa in 1949). However "c.Hole b.Ring" did bring an end to Willie Watson's famous match-saving innings at Lord's in 1953:
Eng. v. Aus., Lord's, 25-30 June 1953
The Australians must have felt mighty relieved when that occurred!

Aye, Woods is appropriate in all cases, Tiger in his first form, not out of the Woods in his second.beamer wrote:Stuart Broad isn't the most appropriate name either given his build! Also Peter Bowler was a batsman...

Dominique Dropsy wasn't much of a Dropsy, earned 17 caps for France as keeper.

Bill Whitty, a left-arm fast bowler noted for dismissing Victor Trumper in fc games, played 14 Tests for Australia between 1909 and 1912 and was Australia's oldest living Test cricketer when he died, aged 87, at the beginning of 1974. No evidence whether or not he was witty, though.

"I'm very happy to be recalled for the Test squad for the series in England," Best said. "I've been waiting for my opportunity to represent the West Indies again and this is another opportunity to wear the Baggy Maroon."
Sweet... one of my favourite quotes.

Dick Young was a precocious cricketer, attracting attention as a wicketkeeper-batsman whilst still a schoolboy at Repton, although he lived to be 82. Brian Close did field very close to the wicket. However Chris Balderstone (nicknamed "Baldy") had a fine head of hair during his playing days although, sadly, he may have lost it as a result of treatment for the cancer that took away his life at the tragically early age of 59 in March 2000.
Even Chris Old (constantly called "Young Old" by Trevor Bailey on TMS when he made his debut - though not, alas, his official one during the 1970 RoW series) is getting on a bit at the age of 63 although he remains young at heart and eternally optimistic working on the periodicals counter at the Truro Sainsbury's if anyone feels like dropping in and saying hello and having a chat about the 1981 Ashes series (but not while the manager's looking):

Jack Crapp was later an umpire wasn't he, so probably at least on occasions people would have thought he lived up to his name...

Famous, although apocryphal story I've told on this forum before about how Crapp, the first Cornishman to play for England (Jack Richards was the second, and, to date, the only other one), was genuinely surprised to be picked for his debut Test at Old Trafford in 1948 and overawed by the distinguished company he would be keeping as he walked into the team hotel in Manchester the day before the game. The dialogue with the desk clerk, reportedly went as follows:
HC: Bed, sir?
JFC: No, Crapp.
HC: 2nd door on the left.
