Are they McLeod (last test) and Cotter (best figures) who both died before 1920?

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
So let's have the rest of the answers
PeterCS wrote:
Q3: (8x Player IDs.)
If we call the player in the back row, far left "1/1", and the player in the front row, far right "4/6" (hence the dood in the white suit becomes "3/1"), can you recognise these famous players? (They are all placed at or next to the ends of the four rows.)
3a. 1/5
3b. 2/1
3c. 3/1
3d. 3/2
3e. 3/5
3f. 3/6
3g. 4/1
3h. 4/2
3h. 4/6
Q4: What do 1/2, 2/8 (looking a bit muscled out here!) and 4/3 all have in common?
Q4b/c: What did "3/3" and "3/4" exactly share - and why was the occasion of this photo highly significant for them both? ...
- Player IDs, incl. all answers to Q3. - Have a go at a few of them before looking!:
- BOLDED players were those asked about. Numbers in brackets refer to batting position for their team in this match (Oval 1905).
Front row: Ted Arnold (, Philip Newland (reserve +), Bert Hopkins (7), Bill Howell, Warwick Armstrong (5)
Second row from back: Wilfred Rhodes (9), Arthur Jones (12th), Victor Trumper (1), Tom Hayward (2), Charlie McLeod (, Walter Brearley (11), Frank Lever (11), Dick Lilley (+, 10), Algy Gehrs (12th)
Third row from back: Charlie Fry (4), Monty Noble (4), FS Jackson (*, 5), Joe Darling (*, 6), AC MacLaren (1), Clem Hill (3)
Front row: Tibby Cotter (10), Reggie Spooner (6), JJ Kelly (+, 9), Johnny Tyldesley (3), George Hirst (7), Syd Gregory (unfit for this match)
Absent from the photograph: Reggie Duff (2), Walter Lees (Surrey, never capped, who was England's "13th man")
- Q4(a):
- All wicketkeepers. (JJ Kelly's relatively long legs aside, note their smallness of stature!)
- Q4b&c:
- Both captains were born on the exact same day: 21 November 1870.
This was the last Test match either of them played.
Jackson played FC cricket sporadically for two more seasons, but as an amateur seeking to make his living elsewhere, he decided to give up the game in 1907.
Darling "claimed that continuing to tour was unfair to his wife. He retired from first-class cricket during the 1907–08 season" (wiki), and continued a farming career in Tasmania. Winningly, wiki also informs us, "He was contemptuous of the newly formed Australian Board of Control for International Cricket Matches (now known as Cricket Australia), who he saw as attempting to remove control of international cricket tours from the players. He would often refer to cricket administrators as 'Dead Heads'...."

Is there such a breed of horse as a Norwegian Blue? But if I keep flogging the bugger, maybe it will turn into a champion racer eventually!
Four single pictures .....
"z01"
I believe this picture was taken in 1924.
All three players here were associated with Lancashire CCC for some years.
In each case, their final Test average (and in two cases, far too short Test careers) does scant justice to their talents - and buries the magic of some trojan performances for their countries.
The man on the left was an ingenious spinner and entertainer, who was unlucky to run slap-bang into a powerful Australian side (twice in a row!). And when poorly used by his next captain, he made that point very public (though he claimed his newspaper "ghostwriter" spiced up his views, and thereby ruined his FC career). Sans ghostwriter, he went on to pen a lively, thoughtful and thought-provoking autobiography:
SO ..... can you work out (in the picture):
a. who is the famed "imported" bowler in the middle?, and
b. who is the outstanding Golden Age batsman on the right?

a. Who is the dismissed batsman?
Why might he have been particularly dismayed by this run out:
b. for his own sake/interests?
c. given the situation of the match?
(Or you could just give location and date, if that's easier!)

- Spoiler:
Athers run out for 99 in the Lords Test of 1993. Serves himself right too after not walking when blatantly out caught earlier in the innings.
The match situation would have been dire because Aust scored well over 600 I think with the top 4 batsman each scoring at least 99 runs!

- Spoiler:
- Is that Omar Henry?
Could he be the first POC to play for Saf?
Just guessing at c but if it was Henry's debut, Wessels scored a ton in that match which I gather is the only time someone has done it for two teams.

Yep, that's the one.
Yep, that's the one.
- Even more pathetic:
This was in the second innings, when England desperately needed their opener ("Iron Mike" - not sure how far the Tysonian moniker was a joke) to bat long and give them some hope of saving the match.

First two parts definitely correct. And it transpires you're right about the third part too - I hadn't clocked that!
And it seems there were other firsts as well ... !
I was thinking of something more "technical". But it there were points to give, of course you'd get them. Your answer is as good as mine. Perhaps the mark of a bad question .....

Or an Aussie.
Or a Saffie.
Or a Kiwi.
Or even from the Caribbean!

Wally strikes again.
On (b), it's the former. (You can find him in the group photo directly before the post including Picture z01 - 19 years earlier!) ~ "JT" was not as severe, ascetic or military-looking (or slightly demented?) as ACMcL! He was a hugely popular figure at Old Trafford, and scored 4 centuries and 9 halves for England, most of them important runs, in a era where batting averages were generally far from stratospheric. Despite this, a disappointing final Test average!
On (a), it's a pity for Australia - and world cricket - that he decided to drop out of the Test scene when he did, before 1921 was out. He might easily have made a couple more Ashes, and other possible matches in between. Also that the First World War had already robbed the game of his younger skills. (But that's the bigger maw that consumed many lives, not only prominent cricket careers.)
He was known at the time for his deadly silky velocity in run-up and delivery (an earlier Mikey?), whereas his partner-in-terror was all gangly body-bashing bounce.
I would hope Big Dog and Lardy also know of him, a briefly crucial figure now sadly long-vanished in the enshrouding mists of time.

Not sure if this was said on the previous pages- Tagenarine and Shivnarine Chanderpaul are currently playing in an FC game for Guyana.

That wuz the trivia part m'lud.
In fact I believe that one more wicket - of the somewhat confusingly named Deonarine - and Shivnarine and Tagenarine could be batting together.
Not in the cricinfo link I gave above, but Guyana is 82/3 chasing 209 in the 4th, Deo 14, Tage 31.

Why is "Deonarine" confusing?
You mean he sounds like a sweet-scented cousin of the mystery spinner?
btw: That sounds like a proper Indian team, not a Caribbean one. All those indentured servants of the past taking over the cricket, what, Carruthers?

Deonarine, Shivnarine, Tagenarine... could have confused me.
Also sounds like the beginning of an 'ethnic' joke.
'Narine' is actually a bastardization of the original 'Narayan'.
And make that a double G&T, old chap.

Okay, let's try another couple. Specially for Horrie, these two.
Tha Picture Question:
1. Which team is this, in which year?
2. Who's the player obscured by the geezer in the suit?
3+. Another other player IDs are bonuses.
(2. will take a bit of detective-type deduction, but it's really not that hard if you follow the leads.)
