You're certainly on the right lines, H. Though if you read the question again, it's quite a bit more closely focussed/limited than your answer.
And thanks for having a go.

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
- Here's the answer!:
- Specifically, they all captained Oxford University CC for one or more seasons.
1894 - C.B. Fry
1896 - H.D.G. Leveson-Gower
1931, 32 - A. Melville
1950 - D.B. Carr
1954 - M.C. Cowdrey
1956 - M.J.K. Smith
1958-60 - A.C. Smith
1963 - Iftikhar Ali Khan (Nawab of Pataudi Jnr)
1974 - Imran Khan
1976, 77 - V.J. Marks
2002, 03 - J.W.M. Dalrymple
Of course I left out the lesser-known figures or those lesser-regarded even than Dalrymple, such as JER Gallian - 1993, MA Wagh - 1997.
Interesting to be reminded that brains do not always make themselves apparent on the field of play. Though the "Gentleman" restriction stymied many of the older names' sporting careers. Being Varsity types, they were under a moral obligation of sorts to do something rather better with their lives than eke out a trivial cricketing pittance!

Well someone's being bowed to. Edward VII was the last fatty. English cricket side circa 1901?

Not AFAIK!
Nor (perhaps more obviously) to Douglas (DW) Carr - though he played for OU too - nor even Notts' bullying coward of a skipper Arthur (who was the incubator and then cheerleader for Bodyline throughout the crisis - and then as soon as it was employed against him personally, in 1933, cried foul and insisted on a gentlemen's agreement not to use it!).
Father of John (JD) Carr though, apparently. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/10672.html

Good, you've picked up on one of the clues in the picture. But the well turned-out chap is only at best stocky, not corpulent, I'd say. Later, quite a bit later!
It helps if you recognise a couple of (pretty famous) faces at the (right) end of the row. The players seem to be lined up more or less in batting order.
Another clue is where such a formal presentation has most often happened during a Test match. That limits the possible date a bit, too.

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
Push it on a few more years still! .... though now you have the right monnerk.
Right town, but this is at a slightly stiffer formal place, befitting the VIP's status. Not common old Sarflunden, oh no! Heaven forfend!!
A few clues from the picture:
The guy bowing to shake hands (the last man in a team apparently lined up in batting order, as I mentioned above) is a gangly-limbed fair-headed bespectacled chap. Glasses. Hmmmm, ..... not that common.
The guy before him in the line is also pretty tall, has a tapering facial structure, also the ramrod bearing and immaculate turnout of, say, a military officer, ... and looks very, very crafty. Is the latter perhaps part of his job as a cricketer?
The guy slightly fuzzy on the far left looks relatively short, observant, intense even. Maybe suggests something about his role in the team? He seems to bat at about 7. (He seems to have jet-black hair and rather heavy eyebrows, though he's not clearly in focus.)
And the grizzled-and-balding fellow whose head peeps out above the captain and VIP - blimey, he must be ancient!!! Maybe a veteran brought in from the counties, or brought back from international retirement, to handle a crisis? From his place in the line, he doesn't appear to be an opener. He's pretty tall, though not quite as tall as his two colleagues to his left, especially the giraffe at the end. [Historical note: He was in fact almost 41, and this was his last Test.]
In fairness, I should add that, in fact, this team's #10 is not in the line, for some reason. Maybe taken short. Hopefully not one of those dashed Republican boundahhhhs, Jeffries?!?! ~ Seriously though, I've no idea why the home team's tearaway young quick happens to be missing from this photo.

- And here's another picture from the same match, two days later - with another look at the VC, this time a proper view of the skipper, and also allowing some of the batsmen a go in the limelight:

Bumping the picture and questions, so nobody has to switch between pages:
1. Which team is this, in which year?
2. Who's the player obscured by the geezer in the suit?
3+. Another other player IDs are bonuses.
(2. will take a bit of detective-type deduction, but it's really not that hard if you follow the leads.)

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
Ok I was looking at the line being the other way, which is silly now I think about the position of the presenter. And down market it may be but numero deuce still owns the place.
The picture had me stuffed because whilst it looks more modern in the main the background looked even older than Edwardian. The bowing had me farked until I realised the brother's get a bow once they married (I think now I think Wimbeldon).
Couldn't work out if they were glasses or bushy eyebrows casting a wierd shadow on bowing guy.
Second picture helps.

- Spoiler:
Haven't read backwards through all the clues but is the guy at the end Bill Bowes. Â The captain's hair looks like Wally Hammond so if I cheat and see that those two only played in one Test while Hammond was skipper - v India at Lords in 46?

- Spoiler:
- Ah, Hammond was captain before the war too so could just as easily be Oval 38 I guess with the tall dude next to maybe Bowes being Farnes?

OK, I've now cheated horribly.Â
I've got two of the players right I think but not the skipper.

ll I'll say is that it's before 1938, and you're right about the giraffe!
Hammond is not in sight though - not even the top of his head! And the #9 in the line and lineup (with #10 absent) is certainly not young Farnes.
I guess you "cheated horribly", JGK, by fake-quoting the 2nd picture to extract the image reference, and then googling that? It's the knack experienced safecrackers have.
I deliberately left that option, for the cunning ...

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
So here's that scorecard that reveals (almost) all
- All major solutions here - check the Pommie batting order:
The akshual MONaaaaak = George V. Da Boss Man 1910-1936. (The pic is from a Silver Jubliee cigarette card set of 1935.) He's not looking in the first flush here, which would indicate towards the end of his bosshood. Put that together with the careers of Bowes, Verity, George Geary (the reintroduced veteran whose head is peeping above the handshakes), Ames and "Couldn't lead a team of 'king tin soldiers" skipper, "Brittle Bob" Wyatt, and you can track the most likely year.
I don't know where Farnes had got to - already missing in flight? (*cruel*).
The point of my "specially for Horrie" comment above these last two puzzles was that it was a special double treat, some of the very pillars of the deferential feudalistic Nazi sycophantic class-riddled corrupt and rotten to the core English establishment, first Oxford Uni and then this bowing to the King at, some say, the Home of Cricket. Lovely!!
The additional picture (identifying players not credited by cricinfo) has Wyatt followed by his VC Hedley Verity (on the left), the diminutive "Patsy" Hendren, W/K Ames (in cap and pads) and the elegant and seriously underrated Cyril Walters (behind Wyatt) - who btw would have been my personal first choice as England skipper on what became the "Bodyline" tour, had Plum had any serious (and courageous) reservations about Captain DRJ until the fallout started and he began to wring his hands, oooooh, horribly. That terrible man Jardine, whom I appointed, and to whose team of body bowlers I co-opted Bowes, who had just been involved with Hobbs in a great flare-up after adopting Bodyline for Yorks. What a terrible hypocrite Warner was. ~ But the "counterfactual history" choice of Walters, and why, is a story for another day ....

Farking cigarette card. That would explain the deceptive nature of the pic.

and Oz has much to be ashamed of during that time...Menzies was allowing sale of pig iron to the Japanese (famously manufactured into armanentd) and was critical of local concerns about germany...interestingly some Victorian Aboriginals partnered with the local jewish community in anti nazi activism in melbourne at that time

Just a quickie:
In what way did Lasith Malinga, Bobby ("Pee") Peel and Charlie "Terror" Turner pip Colin Blythe, Nicky Boje, Dilhara Fernando, Irfan Pathan, Abdul Razzaq and Md ("Super-")Rafiq(ue)?
(Assuming, that is, none of those makes a comeback ...)
