One advantage the Windies bowlers had of course was the luxury of bowling their overs at a slower pace because this wasn't enforced then and you could bowl in a more intimidatory manner than without the umps stepping in. Steyn's wickets have dried a bit since Philander entered the scene.
Yeah, he's only taken 19 so far in 2013.
And of the three tests you've played, Philander missed one.

I think you should be a bit more fair, Nidge. Yes, Steyn has taken 81 wickets @ 21.83 since Vern first played a Test, BUT his S/R is 44.1.
So she's basically right.

True. I was just thinking Lillee would have taken a lot more wickets if Thomson had never been boen.

Not sure if he's better than Mcgrath. On a par, maybe. Completely different types of bowlers.
But to put it in perspective- In this era of huge bats, flat pitches, and short boundaries, to take over 300 test wickets at 22 is quite extraordinary. The man widely considered the second best fast bowler in the world, James Anderson, has taken over 200 wickets at 30. Huge statistical gap between the two.

Huge discrepancy in strike rates. Steyn is down to 40

Steyn was the business from pretty much Test #3 onwards.
Jimbo was piss for an age.

Steyn averaging under nine this year. Seems he is bowling with less pace but greater accuracy and control. Lillee also adapted his bowling style with age.

Steyn bowls in moods. Tends to just put it in the right spot at around 135 kph with the new ball, but often returns angrier with an older ball, and cranks it up to 140+

Steyn bowls within himself when he feels he doesn't need the overexertion - why bowl lightning at a bunch of hacks when they're all over the shop at the lower pace.

This thread could be retitled: "Steyn is the dog's. End of"
