Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XI)
so what were the outcomes of the wests adventure with the Stannies...
yep the talibani are no longer in power but how long before they get back in harness?
heaps of folks have been wounded or terminated by both sides
no-one seems very happy or content
the international price of opiates dropped as production soared...just like the old days when the hmong and the cia made a motza

There was a map printed somewhere yesterday showing areas under control prior to, and post "intervention".
Doesn't look like much was achieved strategically.

Clive Palmer wins seat of Fairfax
October 31, 2013 - 5:07PM
AAP
Mining magnate Clive Palmer has been elected to the federal parliament.
The Australian Electoral Commission announced on Thursday that the Palmer United Party founder was elected to represent the Sunshine Coast seat of Fairfax with a final winning margin of 53 votes.
Mr Palmer now holds the nation's most marginal seat, with a buffer of just 0.03 per cent, making it one of the closest races in Australian political history.
The result comes almost eight weeks after the September 7 federal election, and followed the PUP challenging 50,099 of the 89,176 ballots.
Mr Palmer originally finished 36 votes ahead of his Liberal National Party challenger Ted O'Brien, but the electoral commission on September 21 automatically ordered a recount because the margin was less than 100 votes.

Turns out Carr's vacancy will need to betwice filled twice as well.
Would love to know the law for a Senate "by-election", if there is any. Can anyone/party stand who didn't before?

I see one of the high priests of the magic sky fairy was pontificating that journalists the world over had let down public debate on the issue badly. All been sucked in by the radical left and had checked journalistic ethics and standards at the door. Ashamed to be part of the profession etc.
Just waiting for the MM to quote some of his sources.

While we're at it reverse the damage Howard did to the state school system and reverse the funding inequities. Then we'll start on a public statue to Gough in every one of them.

Asylum seeker arrives on Christmas Island dressed as Australian cricket player

Asylum seeker arrives on Christmas Island dressed as cricket player
A man wearing an Australian cricket uniform is among 60 asylum seekers who have arrived on Christmas Island today.
The group were rescued off Java on Thursday when the boat they were on got into trouble in the Indonesian search and rescue zone.
Australia asked Jakarta to transfer the asylum seekers to Indonesia, but the ABC understands that request was refused.
The group has now arrived on Christmas Island, with footage showing mostly men, including one dressed in an Australian one-day cricket uniform who identified himself as a fast bowler.
It is believed the group will be moved into offshore processing on Nauru or Manus Island.
The group included two women, according to a source on Christmas Island.
Leader of Government Business Christopher Pyne says the asylum seekers will never set foot in Australia.
"The message is out there. Boats have been turned back," he told Channel 10.
"Sometimes it won't work that way and those people who will come to Christmas Island will go straight to Manus Island or Nauru and they will never set foot in this country."

PMSL @ Sooky Morrison:
Indonesia's refusal to accept the return of asylum seeker boats is "very frustrating", Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has said, in what appears to be a swipe at Australia's northern neighbours.
Mr Morrison said in Sydney on Monday there was “no real rhyme or reason” why Indonesian authorities had not taken stricken asylum seekers back to their shores after a three-day impasse late last week.
