When Hussey is 80 years old and is a dribbling incoherent mess (a bit like someone else I could mention) he would still be a better batsman than Smith will ever be.

This is JGK-like ...

ROFL...I agree with Basil...Smith remains the SF until he can prove he is capable overseas...even against the duke bowled by the has beens like Jimmeh and never wasses like Broad

Smith did actually score a ton in 2013 in England, so he has partially answered his critics. Anyway Horrie, I bet you wish Rhino was as fit as Jimmy appears to be.

Jimmeh looks in fine fettle and I expect him to take a minimum of 28 wickets in the Ashes

As for Smith, he has the eye of a dead fish but will always be prone to the moving ball...I will be thrilled if he averages 40+ on the pomgolian tour

I am looking for an early heads up from you and Monkeh on the state of the pommy pitches...will they be feeling the affects of drought or flood? Oz of course will have no cause for complaint this time given our own unfogivable doctoring of pitches this summer

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle when you hear about the two extremes of Clarke's personality.

I have no doubt he has a very large ego, but he can rightly point to his record as both a batsman and a captain as reason for him being included in the Australian squad.

But on the other hand, he seems to be too pig-headed to realise that isn't the point- Everyone knows he can bat and captain extremely well. The problem is entirely his body- It just doesn't seem to be able to hold up anymore. He's had to retire hurt in his last three international games, and you can't have a captain and a player who is injured a good deal of the time. It's one of the reasons why fast bowlers are rarely made captain.

He rubs some people up the wrong way, and enjoys his money and fame. He's perhaps not the best liked teammate ever. I doubt he's anyone's best friend in that Aussie dressing room.

But you feel that Smith is better-liked all round by not just teammates, but those in charge at Cricket Australia, despite evidence so far suggesting he may not be as good a captain ON the field as Clarke. There is zero ego with Smith. And deep down, Clarke's teammates may not argue as strongly as they could on Clarke's behalf when Smith is the alternative.

hmmnn...several more than fair points in your post.

I think pup has been a damned good and gutsy player (remember the ton with the damaged shoulder v the boer) and a pretty decent leader who shown the ability to grow in the role. he has also had to deal with a/h's who have sought to undermine him - fleas, clotto, haddit et al...he has not got stuck into them publicly or seemingly leaked stuff to the media...

Of course he may not be a great leader in the mold of Caesar, Margaret Thatcher, George w Bush, Cookie or Freddy F, but hey not everyone can achieve those lofty heights

Meh. It's a simple argument as far as I'm concerned. If Clarke is fit, is he one of the 6 best bats in the country? If the answer is "yes" (and it is) then he goes to the Caribbean and England as captain, to give us maximum potential to retain the Urn.

I've played in numerous cricket sides and every one had egos and cliches that detracted just slightly from the spirit and comradery of the winning sides I played in. The most successful team I played in won 7 out of 11 A-grade comps. Half the team hated the other half (familiarity breeds contempt) and used to bag each other unmercifully behind their backs (I stood in the slips listening to it for 4 of those years). But all 11 gave 100% every time they played - for the results the effort brought. No-one played deliberately poorly because they didn't particularly like the skipper, star bowler, or star bat. The difference between that side and the Aus side - no press speculation or ridiculous media questions to answer or defend yourself/your captain/another player against.

But in general the argument isn't whether he's one of the best six batsmen in the country. It's whether Clarke accepts the deadline the selectors have (rightly) given him to prove his fitness. You have to draw a line somewhere. If Clarke isn't fit, they'll need to call up a fit and able reserve batsman who they'll need if one of the first choice top six gets injured.

If a batsman gets injured in aus's first match of the tournament, they're a little bit screwed, as squad batsman Clarke won't be fit to play in the next match.

Am I right in saying that Aus could only call up a batsman from outside the squad if there isn't another batsman in the squad? Wouldn't the ICC say it's tough luck as by picking Clarke in the squad in the first place it's to be assumed he's fit?

If Clarke can't prove his fitness for the Gilly he'll miss the tournament. Then he will play 2 or 3 Shield games (the Blues still have 5 to play + maybe the Final) once fit to prove himself for the Caribbean.

I don't know why they don't have squads of 22 or 23 like in football tournaments... well maybe not quite that many as unlike football there's no in-match subs, but 15 is crazy, there's barely even room for a backup keeper.

100% agree, beams. It's all about the cost of sending those extra players, not about maximising a team's chances to win the comp.

Perhaps the $/£s involved/available in football are overwhelmingly larger than in cricket, allowing what would appear to be more commonsense.

Squads for three-match Test tours are bigger... this competition lasts about six weeks, I know fewer actual days of cricket than a Test series but potentially several more individual matches to select a team for.

Who was the last Australian captain to go at the right time? Mark Taylor back in 1999? Border, Steve Waugh and Ponting all stayed on about a year too long.

I think that after the Phil Hughes tragedy, his battles with fitness for the last year, his battles with the coach and the selectors in that same time, and the rollercoaster of the World Cup win, he has nothing left to give, whether he admits it or not.

And there's always been rumours of pro and anti Clarke players in the Aus team. Steve Smith's rise and captaincy against India last home Summer probably made those divisions even wider. People now have a clear view of life after Clarke.

In recent times Australian players seem to have become obsessed with trying to manufacture a fairytale ending to their careers. I'm sure Clarke imagines ending his career against the Windies at the SCG this coming Summer, being carried around the ground by his teammates after scoring a hundred in his final test innings. It very, very rarely works out that way.

embee wrote:Dubber papers calling Clarke toxic

In the lead-up to the Sydney Test, the Australian team enjoyed a barbecue at the luxury South Coogee home of opening batsman Dave Warner.

The six-bedroom, five-bathroom, three-level mansion reportedly cost Warner and his fiancee Candice Falzon $6.5 million last year. It was made famous two years earlier as the set for the UK reality TV show Geordie Shore.

On the surface, there is nothing exceptional about the Australian side's pre-match get-together, save for the person who wasn't there.

That Michael Clarke bizarrely didn't attend is a glimpse into the hurricane that is forming ahead of the World Cup and onwards to July to an Ashes defence on English soil.

How the final chapter of Clarke's career plays out will make Geordie Shore as eventful as Romper Room. Almost everyone involved in Australian cricket knows about it, is talking about it, and wonders where it will all end.

Probably in tears.

Clarke is at war with his superiors. And, as much as he belligerently holds onto the idea of playing for his country again, it is also clear his teammates have moved on without him.

In Steve Smith they trust. It's that simple.

Former South African captain Graeme Smith probably doesn't know how close to the bone he cut when he said this last week: "Michael has been an outstanding captain, but is more of an abrasive personality. It will be interesting to see now that they have been under Smith for the last few months and if Michael moves back into that space, how then that shifts the personality of the team."

There are two issues at play here: Clarke's broken relationship with Cricket Australia management and his relationship with his teammates.

The captain has been on a collision course for months with almost every level of the Cricket Australia hierarchy, from chief executive James Sutherland to high-performance manager Pat Howard to chairman of selectors Rod Marsh to coach Darren Lehmann. Some officials complain he's refused to return their phone calls.

Part of the tension is about team selections. When Queensland batsman Joe Burns was selected for the Boxing Day Test, Clarke was said to be angry about not being consulted.

Yet much of the animosity concerns his dodgy hamstrings and lower back problems.

There's a case for being the ultimate competitor, doing everything possible to get on to the field. On this score, Clarke has to be admired. There's another case for being an unwanted distraction for the team.

It was going to come to a head on November 25 as Clarke vaingloriously told anyone who would listen of his desire to play in the first Test against India at the Gabba.

The day before, he publicly contradicted Marsh about playing in a two-day warm-up match in Adelaide to prove his fitness.

Sutherland and others had enough of it. They were going to rule him out of the Test side and select Phillip Hughes.

Then everything changed.

Later that day, a Sean Abbott bouncer felled Hughes at the SCG and two days later the batsman's life support was turned off.

Clarke, his teammates and officials were united in grief. The skipper was the definitive leader as they laid their friend to rest in his home town of Macksville.

Suddenly, Cricket Australia suits changed their tune. They wanted their inspirational captain in the side for the rescheduled Test in Adelaide, where he scored a ton and tore a hammy.

Now, though, the issue of Clarke's future has flared again.

Privately, he is furious about selectors setting a deadline of February 21 — the second pool match against Bangladesh — to prove his fitness for the World Cup after hamstring surgery.

An eternal optimist and tireless when it comes to preparation, Clarke is adamant he will be fit – although most behind the scenes tell you he is a slim prospect at best.

They predict he won't recover in time, and that's when the hurricane will hit. Clarke's camp says he had initially been given until March 4 — the fourth pool match against Afghanistan — to prove his fitness.

There has either been a major miscommunication or Cricket Australia is setting up its own captain to fail.

If Clarke is ruled out, expect fireworks. At the very least, he will want to play Sheffield Shield cricket for NSW to prove a point. The Blues are already saying they don't want to be caught in the middle of the fight.

Meanwhile, in the Australian dressing-room, those in baggy greens are humming along quite nicely. They have seen life without the Clarke sideshow and they quite like it.

Smith is a laid-back character who carries a form guide in his back pocket. Clarke has often been described as a player who would rather spend time with celebrity mates.

And Clarke has no greater celebrity mate than Shane Warne. It was never more obvious how close the pair are than during their stint together in the Channel Nine commentary box.

During the Brisbane Test, Clarke was effectively commentating on the match via his own Twitter feed. He also retweeted a post from a fan who demanded he be part of the Nine commentary team while injured.

Like magic, Clarke was there in the middle of the MCG on Boxing Day, with a Nine microphone in hand.

For Nine, securing Clarke for the Melbourne and Sydney Tests was a coup. For Clarke, joining the commentary team of past players while still playing was an air swing.

He might've been insightful, he might've shown where his future will be in retirement, but many of his teammates were far from impressed as their captain openly discussed strategies, technique and what players were thinking and should be doing in the centre.

It was dangerous territory for a current captain to traverse. For instance, each time he passed comment on Shane Watson it was nearly impossible not to recall the ugly fallout between the pair in India in 2013.

Clarke's teammates were also said to be less pleased with his appearance in the dressing-room during those Tests.

It's been argued that Clarke was there for rehab purposes. Others say his presence was odd and a distraction.

How does Clarke return to a successful side? If at all?

He has been a polemic figure inside and outside the dressing-room almost every step of his undulant career. A platoon of former players often ask whether Clarke puts himself ahead of the baggy green.

Doubtless, he will see this column as an attack. It is not.

His decency and selflessness were there for all to see when Hughes died.

Yet everywhere you stepped this summer, the topic of conversation among some of the highest echelons of Australian cricket hasn't been about Warner's sparkling form, or Smith's captaincy, or whether Warney is single or not.

It was about Clarke and the hurricane looming on the horizon.

For a player who has played more than 100 Tests, scored more than 8000 runs, and captained Australia to an unforgettable Ashes victory, you would ideally hope his career finishes in dignity.

From Ferraris to being grabbed by Simon Katich by the throat at the SCG to Bingle-gate to Homework-gate to this latest imbroglio, it seems certain to end as it has always been.

Like an episode of Geordie Shore, probably in tears.

a bit of a karticle, but perhaps prescient

FFS. How fickle and disloyal are cricket fans the world over? England are going 3-1 up against the team rated 2 in the world on day three of this match later today yet Lyth, Cook, Bell, Ballance, Butler to name just a few have been recently slaughtered for being poor batsmen, poor fielders and in Cook's case a poor captain. Michael Clarke? Aussie fans hold your heads in abject shame. The man might talk some crap on the field with his sledging but has over 8600 runs for your team. A best of 329 not out. Averages a gnat's under 50. Gets them at a strike rate of 56 per 100 balls. Has 28 tons and 27 50s. Get farking real and get some loyalty. England and Australian fans alike.
