Re: Chappelli: ICC needs to clamp down on sledging.
baseball has far more sledging than cricket at its worst...moreover sledging is not limited just to the poms v strinos as you appear to claim....think the recent Bannie sledging of Watson (which I really though was funny) and the Monkeygate affair(which was not funny)
tho the prospect of China v Japan cricket is entertaining given the historic antipathy between the two countries....would put the stannie v bannie tests in the shade

Nahh. I can't quite believe this. You're saying that a proven mouth doesn't deserve mouth back because of his batting ability? Stunning. The fact is I've seen Jimbo 'sledge' all manner of batsmen, 1-11. He deserves shit as soon as he gets out there. And, to be fair, he takes the shit he gets. All I've seen George Bailey do since I've seen him, is smile and be genial. Must have been some special stick to rile him up. He looked awful doing it, but nasty breeds nasty.
I'm astonished that people are going on about it so much. Yes, the conduct of the Aus team when winning, and in the media before and after, has been pretty pisspoor - but that's Australia and in regards to England, it's been coming.

I played both baseball and cricket and can't remember any significant difference in the level of sledging.horace wrote:baseball has far more sledging than cricket at its worst...moreover sledging is not limited just to the poms v strinos as you appear to claim....think the recent Bannie sledging of Watson (which I really though was funny) and the Monkeygate affair(which was not funny)

Well for my tuppenceworth, Jimmy A can both give and take a bit of lip. I'm sure he used to take a lot worse in his early years, and I doubt anything said will really affect him nowadays.
I'm not saying a tail-end batsman should never be sledged, however mouthy they may normally be - but I'm with Gary in thinking that there's usually no need for it.
Yes, if said tailender has hung around for an hour or so with a top-order bat with a chance of winning (or even saving) a tight game - then he's fair game for a rattling.
Yapping at No 11 coming to the crease, last wicket needed for the match with over a days play and 100 or more lead, just looks like the school bully having a go at "speccy-four-eyes" simply because he can, a la Harry Flashman.
That's why, in the circumstances at Brisbane I don't feel that Pup exactly covered himself in glory. As a result, the talk - even among some Australians - isn't purely about the cricket itself, but as to how much of an ignorant, foul-mouthed bogan Michael Clarke is.

TBF Flashy was a better owner than Jimmy.Growler wrote:Well for my tuppenceworth, Jimmy A can both give and take a bit of lip. I'm sure he used to take a lot worse in his early years, and I doubt anything said will really affect him nowadays.
