Aussies aboard missing Malaysian airliner

Not often these planes go down, if in fact this one has.

The loss of human life is equally tragic, no matter where the people come from, Red.
There are/were over 200 people on board the plane.

Yeah, sad news.
Vietnamese navy to their state media
http://tuoitrenews.vn/society/18157/missing-malaysia-airlines-plane-has-not-entered-vn-airspace-caav
edit- uncomfirmed, of course, and denied by Malaysia.... could well be an exceptional bit of translation by state media
According to the bbc, the plane would've run empty at 8 am anyway.

In this day and age I don't really understand how it is that they "lose" a plane. I would think that it would be possible to track the location of every plane, all the time.

If it crashes in the ocean there's probably about 20 minutes before it completely sinks. I believe the black box puts out a GPS signal?
I remember a few years ago they lost a plane flying from Brazil to France, and didn't find it until about two weeks later because it had crashed into the ocean.

An Italian & an Austrian who were thought to be on the plane have been found to be alive. They had had their passports stolen some months earlier & were not actually on the flight. Bad luck, i guess, for whoever it was that bought the dodgy passports on the blackmarket. Just shows that crime doesnt pay.

There's a possibility the passports were being used by terrorists.
The strange thing is that the passports had actually been reported stolen, so how the hell were they able to fly with them?

Re: Aussies aboard missing Malaysian airliner
The pilot had over 30 years experience, so unless he committed murder/suicide by deliberately crashing the plane, it's unlikely he would have been involved in a terrorist plot. And cockpit doors can't just be pushed open these days, so if there were terrorists on board, you'd think the pilot would have been able to put out a distress call before the cockpit was breached.
Odd. The only other scenario is that there was a sudden, catastrophic damage, such as an explosion (leaking fuel pipes? Engine explosion?) Still, it would have to be something truly sudden and catastrophic for them not even to send out a distress call.

Very good point. Maybe they didn't have those chip thingies.

Nasty biz. Sounds decidedly sinister. RIP to all if the plane has, as seems almost certain, gone down.

It doesn't need anything major to happen at 30,000ft for it to be catastrophic. As an avid fan of ACI I sometimes wonder why I'm not a frequent cruiser rather than flyer. Still stats and all are on your side i spose.

Around 40 ships and 15 planes are working around the clock but haven't found anything yet.....seriously, how long does it take to find a 777 aircraft? It's been around 60 hours now.

Well it took searchers five days to find the Air France wreckage and two years to find its black box despite having a lot more information at hand as to location.

It can't help the searchers that black helicopters have already removed all the debris

Now it turns out that both fake passengers bought their tickets at same time.
The plane attempted to turn back but not communication was sent. Not even an automatic distress msg by the plane. there is a video floating around somewhere on the net of breaching the cockpit in 2 seconds (ya u heard that right) using a drinks cart while the pilot opened the door for a pee break.

Tests have shown that the oil slick that was spotted yesterday is not from the missing plane.

Were they Chinnooks or Stealth (as used in Zero Dark Thirty) ?
Sorry, a bit of black humour . . .

I was thinking- Can't they use a satellite to try and find the remains of the plane? Surely in 2014 there is a high-resolution camera that can zoom in on any part of the globe from space.
There's also drones.
