Feel sorry for Andy Pirlo though. From the games I've seen (admittedly only a handful), he and Modric looked the standout midfielders of the tourney. (The latter looked a fish out of water when stuck up in the hole last night though. Cramped for space, no freedom to roam and set the play up.)

Both still look wizards. Poise, determination and creative ideas in action, constantly tackling, switching play, and spurring their teams on.

Both of them now on their way home.

Teammates not good enough, perhaps. Or lacking a bit of bite? Pity.

It's his third offence, surely FIFA have to enforce a worldwide ban from all football of some length? Liverpool see £80m go up in smoke and Man Utd's new manager thinks all his Christmases have come at once, even before possibly winning the World Cup with Holland!

FIFA won't do shit. They didn't even give Pepe a three match ban for headbutting Muller.

He got the same punishment as for deliberate handball.

When he was in tears about how the English press have treated him harshly (for being a racist biter) after the England game I did think that maybe he should be in some sort of institution. He seems to be genuinely mental ill and I had a feeling something like this might be on the way. Unhinged isn't strong enough, I'm struggling to think of a bigger head case in football.

Yes I know. There is a bit of pretty football even in this backwater group. And the odd world-class player, where not superannuated.

But all the knocked-out teams - yea, even sad old 2-goal, 1-point Engerlund - must be looking at this group with yearning eyes. "If only ..."

I'd have taken Italy, for example, to take any one of them by 2 or 3. Even Oz would have "been" a chaince.
