Re: Phillip Hughes dies, aged 25
Banning bouncers would do diddly squat to lessen a batsman's injury risk - all it would mean is, batsmen (being the lazy, complacent, coddled brats they are these days) wouldn't waste time practising playing a delivery they shouldn't ever have to face in a match situation, so their technique against the (now accidental) 'throat ball' would go from faulty to non-existent.

The ratio of injured players/dangerous deliveries is amazing when you think about it.

Thankfully, these days, really serious incidents like this are incredibly rare. That doesn't make them any less gut wrenching but an element of danger is part of the deal the players all sign up for.
Except Tuffers. He had a note from his mum.
spot on Jay...as a vin ordinaire bat and worse keeper I twice lost fangs off slow bowlers (would not call them spinners - they were complete D'ohs)....one when batting was a particularly inept sweep.
when batting against quicks even as a top order bat I often hid at square leg

Sports people who triumphed after traumatic head injuries like Phillip Hughes'
Date

A former West Indies batsman who suffered a similar injury to that of Phillip Hughes says he hopes the Australian will be lucky enough to recover as he did.
Phil Simmons was hit by a fast ball by David Lawrence in a tour match for the West Indies against Gloucestershire in Bristol in 1988.
His heart stopped after the accident, but he made a full recovery after extensive brain surgery.
Simmons was 25 at the time, the same age as Hughes. Unlike the Australian, he wasn't wearing a helmet.
He told the BBC on Tuesday that his wife had called him as soon as she heard about Hughes.
"He is the same age as I was, with the same [first] name. I think there's an omen somewhere that he will pull through and I hope so," Simmons said.
"All I thought about when I came through was that I wanted to play again. I wasn't studying all the tubes all over my body. That was my catalyst. I looked forward to playing cricket again and playing for the West Indies."
He took to the field again within four months, playing in a charity match in the Caribbean.
He rejoined the West Indies team the following year.
"My injury was as serious as you can get. I had to have emergency surgery to have a clot removed from my brain," Simmons told the BBC.
"I was written off as never to play again and put in a long-term unit for head injuries, but I was out in eight days."
Simmons also stressed the bowler was never to blame for sports injuries such as his.

Nice sentiment by Phil Simmons. Hope his omen is correct.
Dicks were phoning in on talkback demanding short pitched bowling be banned. Talk about people with no understanding of the great game. [sigh]

2GB - the Ben Fordham arvo show. Fordo seems to have very limited cricket knowledge as well. To his credit though, he stopped taking calls on bouncer banning after 3 clowns (who didn't know what they were talking about) rang up demanding the move. Seriously, they gave me a headache.JGK wrote:skully wrote:

The Assassin is having a wee poke there. He knows I abhor Gloria and never listen to the old tart, but I do like listening to Bolts. Hadley does get his share of arseclowns calling but generally he gives 'em the arse pretty quickly if they are ill-informed.

There might not be too many right-wing nutters presenting, but judging by the SMS sludge at least 2/3 of the audience make Andrew Bolt sound like Phillip Adams.

They have the results of scans taken but a sports doctor just on said it doesn't expect to hear much change over the next couple of days. The part of Hughes' brain injured was that which controls motor skills and consciousness.

Conjecture (and that's all it can be) on the wireless is the lack of news when some was promised (the Aus cricket doctor said yesty he'd give further details when available, and Phil has certainly had more scans today) is that no additional news is a grim thing (nothing good to say). But then radio jocks would say that, wouldn't they?
