Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XII)
All of the above is true ... but aren't we talking about the current Syrian crisis?
I don't think ETG is being too cynical.

I'm not serious, but I'm sure you get the point ... the Syrian disaster has little to do with 'bombing the crap' out of the Middle East. It has everything to do with the US and others supporting the 'Arab Spring' rebellion against Assad (and others in the area of his ilk) in so many ways, without fully thinking through or anticipating what might arise in the power vacuum they helped to create.
ISIS is filling in the power vacuum in Iraq which was caused by Bush bombing the crap out of Saddam and then Obama pulling out too early.
Taking it all back further, it could all be blamed on the neo-cons like Anton Scalia on the US Supreme Court who ruled to stop the Florida recount in 2000 allowing his buddy Dick Cheney to take power.

Interesting that the Lib Democrats are preferencing the ALP over the Libs in Canning.

Considering the Lib Dems didnt have a candidate in the 2013 election I dont see it as a problem
Probably a reaction to the Libs trying to force them to change their name
Media doing their best to make it something it isnt

wouldn't have thought so. Lib Dems generally vote with the government. But I think MB is right - it is a far q to Brian Loughane.

... you mean Mr Credlin?
(Loughnane)
Obviously I'm not up with the Lib Dems, I had always assumed they were ALP stalking horses, a bit like the original Democrats, the Greens and most of the Independents. Incorrect? Have they actually preferenced the ALP below 2nd in the past?

... so now I've googled them. Sound like a bunch of nutbag irrelevancies. Completely missed them and their 'policies'; which shows how interested I've been recently.

Don't fall into the Andrew Bolt mistake. Obama pulled out to a timetable established by Bush. But your point is well made. It wouldn't have been the first time the West had left a brutal but otherwise tame dictator in place for equilibrium's sake.

I'm actually avoiding the non sports news totally of late. The international stuff makes you sick and the domestic stuff suicidal.

Oh dear. Dutton an idiot for making the 'joke', and Abbott an even bigger idiot for laughing. Good to see they're now taking climate change seriously.....

Labour will be all over that. There will be loud calls for Dutton to be sacked.

The Drum has had some fun with pollies who've been caught out by concealed microphones before - Reagan, Bush, Gordon Brown ... but this is my favourite.

Not really. Its only the pinko's who are creaming their jeans. I suspect the great unwashed could'nt give a toss.
Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XII)
I just wish ALL our elected representatives, of whatever persuasion, could try to behave as intelligently as they no doubt can, and as sensitively as possible, when on display. It's a bad look when they show themselves to be profane bullies or insensitive arrogant twats.

The cricketers would be a vast improvement on the politicians, I'm sad to report. Stick the worst of the English, Australian, and Indian teams together and you still wouldn't approach the gauche offensive arrogance of our politicians. Each side of our politics is as bad as the other. Both major parties are totally dominated by schoolyard bullies, overgrown bovver boys, footy jocks who never had a real job but just kicked heads all the way to the top of the factional pre-selection race. It's not just the current mob. 'Ratf*ckers', anyone? 'Those *unts from the embassy', anyone?
