Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XII)
Interesting in QT when Turnbull was saying what a good PM Abbott was that he didn't list getting rid of the carbon tax as one of his achievements.

A snap Morgan poll taken this afternoon on who Australian voters regard as the better PM has found Mr Turnbull is preferred by 70 per cent of voters compared to 24 per cent for Bill Shorten.
“Australian electors have given a massive mandate to new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on his first day as PM,’’ said pollster Gary Morgan who conducted the special Snap SMS poll of 1204 voters.
“Turnbull leads clearly amongst both genders, across all States and Territories and leads Shorten across supporters of both major parties.
“LNP supporters have given Turnbull a huge show of support: Turnbull 86 per cent; Shorten 7 per cent. Even more remarkably, a majority of ALP supporters say Turnbull is the Better PM: Turnbull 50 per cent; ALP Leader Shorten 44 per cent.
“Greens supporters have also swung behind the new Prime Minister: Turnbull 57 per cent; Shorten 38 per cent.’’

Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XII)
the gormless less than gracious MM exit is being widely commented on. his failure to communicate with the GG in a timely and appropriate manner and to delay his presser...even ljh would have done a far better and more gracious job
here is a typical comment from a Guardian reader
Abbot was a spineless coward to the end. A graceless, extremely tardy acknowledgement of his demise. Rude behaviour....a fax to the Gov.Gen. to resign, instead of a visit, not even a personal phone call, which delayed the entire process. He displayed unadorned, the clear evidence of the claim that he was the worst P.M. ever inflicted upon our country. He deserves no accolade whatsoever.

The other spin is ....
Abbott was removed as leader of the Libs
The Coalition govt is made up of libs and nats
Turnbull had to get the support of the Nats before he could get the GG's nod to be PM
Abbott waited to resign until Turnbull had the nats
The truth may be somewhere in the centre (right)

Hard to be too critical of Abbott. The man's just had his whole world ripped apart.

A rare bit of Pinko commonsense. horrie should try it. You Pinks do realise that the chances of the Libs winning the next election have skyrocketed, no?

A nationwide ReachTel Seven-West poll of just under 3300 voters taken on Tuesday night showed voters were flooding back to the Coalition under its new management, with Mr Turnbull catapulting ahead of Labor's Bill Shorten as preferred prime minister with a lead of 61.9 per cent to 38.1 per cent.
The Coalition's support has also rebounded for the first time in months with a primary vote of 43.3 per cent to Labor's 35.9, making for a two-party-preferred share of the vote of 50-50 based on preference flows at the 2013 election

It's just a honeymoon phenomenon ... things will drift back to 45/40 and 15% swinging voters over the next 6 months as everybody is reminded what an arrogant narcissistic tool Turnbull is.
Next election: another hung parliament on election night, with an ALP PM after coalition talks, and an ineffective house controlled by the Greens.

well of course Malcolm will bolt in at the next election - prolly with an increased majority..
the MM has been churlish to the end offering no congrats and wimpering about sniping inc the media...toughen up baby...News Ltd campaigned on a daily basis against rudd/Gillard/rudd...the MM has no right to protest about the media...Murdoch and right wing wing nuts such as Bolt and Jones jabbered continually for the MM...in every other case I can remember defeated leaders offered congrats to the winner...the MM still has not.
What I think is the best upshot of this week is that it is has put a stake into the heart of the extreme right of the libs (Abets, Dutton, Andrews, and particularly Cormann) Feel a bit for smoking jo who I do not think is a crazed extreme right ideologue but has been caught up in it. If the extreme lunar right are put out of the picture then a Lib win at the next election is more tolerable. One has to tka e a long term view.

Re: Aus Federal Politics thread (XII)
In QT today:
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten begins with a question for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
"Given that it's only taken two days for the Liberal cabinet to start leaking again, doesn't this just prove that even though there's a new Liberal leader, it's the same policies, the same chaos and the same division?" he asks.
"The heartlessness of the Leader of the Opposition is in full evidence today," Mr Turnbull says. "I mean, he has no compassion, no feeling for the thousands of people watching question time week after week whom he bores and drives to the point of complete frustration with one pointless political claim after another."
"It is indicative of the engaging and collaborative style of my government that I'm prepared to help the Leader of the Opposition and actually show him a question. So the
question could have been, 'What does - how does the Prime Minister react to the claim that a very small percentage of women were appointed by him to Government boards?' That would be a reasonable question and I'll give him the answer."
"The Government remains committed to its target of women holding 40 per cent of positions on Australian Government boards and I point to the official data which will be published in the gender balance on Australian government boards report 2014/15 later this year and it shows that women held 40per cent of communications portfolio board appointments".

he has to be shifted from Finance as he is part of the problem. he also has no skills of public persuasion. He could not be let near Indigenous Affairs or Immigration. Maybe Social Services - ScoMo's old portffolio

skully - ScoMo will be Treasurer - an apt place for counting 30 pieces of silver (would be the MM's observation) - as part of the deal with Turnbull
Turnbull has to get rid of some clear underperforming senior Ministers - who are nearly all on the lunar right as well as jnr Ministers but at the same time be seen to be rewarding some of the crazies...Hard job.
