Maybe he heard that they wanted "a safe pair of hands"?

@poms...

I look forward to selection of Mark Waugh and several other over rated NSW/Pom players (whats the difference anyway?)

Maybe he just had to pretend to have worn the gloves to get an interview...

I certainly don't remember him ever keeping at Shield level. Just poor journalism.

Maybe he told them a few porkies at the interview. You know how it goes -

Mr Bayliss, what was your first class batting average?

TB - 35

That's not good enough

TB - It's pretty good for a wicketkeeper

Good point. You are now are number one choice. We just have to interview Mr Gillespie

One hour later
Mr Gillespie, what was your first class batting average?

JG - 19

That's terrible. We won't give you the job if you were that bad

JG - But I was a fast bowler. I took 259 test wickets

Don't try to pull the wool over our eyes. We're not that gullible. We are going to give the job to that former wicketkeeper Trevor Bayliss

JG - Former wicketkeeper!!!! Trevor Bloody Bayliss never kept wicket in his life

No one likes a sore loser, Mr Gillespie

JG - Trevor Bloody Bayliss played for New South Wales & still couldn't make the test team. That's how bad he was.

Please leave now Mr Gillespie or we will have to call security.

I liked this bit best of all:

TB - It's pretty good for a wicketkeeper

Which doesn't say that he was.

For that matter I worked alongside Sachin Tendulkar Brian Lara and Shane Warne. That is, I was working when they were in Delhi, alongside me in a manner of speaking. May I coach England?

I say this 'alongside' has potential. I'm sure I was alongside when someone was shagging Mila Kunis...

I guess it's safe to assume Bayliss is the third best coach in the world.

It's certainly a left field choice. Are they hoping he will invent some new technology to help them?

Trevor Baylis, the inventor of the "wind up radio" apparently... certainly an apt choice.

Horrie thinks he invented the "wind up". I presume the radio works better.

It's funny because it's true.

I remember him being touted as a Test hopeful in the ABC Cricket Book in his second season; can you guess who used to moderate that section of that annual 'bible'? Jim Maxwell.
