EDIT: Because my impression is that it is now a system of soft guidelines rather than fixed quotas.
International team is slightly soft. Should be 4 POC.
Domestic is hard. 6 POC, of whom 3 must be black.
We all understand the reasons for this but it seems sad, and certainly discriminatory that some sections of the population have in theory eleven spots open to them while some a maximum of five they can hope to be eligible for.
What are the reasons for it? I don't understand them at all. Maybe you can explain it.
Okay I don't agree with them because I have never believed in discriminating against someone to appease previous discrimination. Nonetheless I believe the reasoning would be that to maximise the talent base from SA (including all demographics), there has been a need to be pro active in promoting non-white talent to act as role models and generate interest in that section of the community. With non-whites being the vast majority of the SA population, it is important to ensure that there is a healthy representation there and that young talent is continually nurtured and is coming through.
My view though is that those promoted on the one hand can feel privileged which affects their work ethic. It cannot be healthy to think that one merely turns up and has a right to play against someone who is more meritorious regarding promotion to a team. Conversely those who are genuinely talented will believe they are targeted when their form drops and included under the quota umbrella. Most significantly some aspirants will have their dreams compromised or destroyed because of the need to apply some political agenda or at best accommodate the previously disadvantaged and promote wider patronage of a sport.
A reasonable analogy is affirmative action for women in my sector of work. It was well meaning but discriminated against some men and also resulted in some terrible appointments to key positions.

Don't think anyone has been arrested yet. My son came up with an interesting name, that ticks a couple of boxes for me. For obvious reasons I don't want to name him on a public forum.
Cricinfo is saying an unnamed person has been charged

Well if he's been charged he can't stay anonymous for long.

If we are doing a CDL style exercise, my bid is on Gibbs.

Well if he has been charged he should be named. All this is doing is throwing suspicions on the innocent.

Re: SA cricket in crisis Part 2
Well, I've narrowed it down to four players who I think it could be. Let's see if this guy is one of those four.
All of mine are still playing at first class level, but none were going to be picked for South Africa again, save for one, a left arm seamer who is a bit of a one day specialist, who might get another call up (assuming he's innocent)

Once again demographics. The sad truth of the matter is young black kids don't give a shit about cricket. Football is the overwhelming game of choice. Having said that I agree fully that the game should be nurtured at grass root levels. CSA has failed dismally at this. They have been enforcing quotas at junior provincial levels for years. Why is there not a natural progression to the senior ranks? Maybe because of the quota implementation the standards have been lowered. The likes of Rabada and Bavuma did not come through grass root developments but attended elite private schools. The whole quota at senior and national level is to disguise the utter ineptitude of CSA.

Surely he's not so stupid that he would do this sort of thing again?

It might be interesting to check who is not playing FC today.

did they attend the elite private schools because they were good at cricket or would they have attended anyway?

I can't answer that but it is immaterial to my point as they would not have succeeded under CSA programmes.
