Well, they have done a rather poor job of marking.

The English are funny. There is nothing in sports writing that is quite like coverage of an unexpected loss.

Presumably yes. It was a stat quoted by the lamenting poms on radio tonight. Of course with Brexit, they appear to be disowning many residents.

Last night was sweet, imagining all the "leave" voters with their flags out ready to watch mighty mighty England and we get knocked out by Iceland.

Good. Well chuffed for them, they deserved it and it was one of the worst England performances I have ever seen, and a performance that the country deserves.

Playing Sturridge wide right, Kane in a vague midfield crowd, Wilshere way out of form. And Hart as the pillar.

Dropping one of England's two most inventive players (was Lallana injured?), taking off England's best player of the tournament shortly after half time. Rashford as an afterthought with very few minutes to go.

Oh, and one of Iceland's key plays is the renowned long throw .... that led straight to their first goal.

There seemed no shape, strategy or tactics in sight. No composure - no pace, or technique, when needed. Maybe Hodgson & Co had spent the wekk sitting in the pub, telling the players it would be a walk in the park, but THEY'D BETTER NOT KIN LOSE.

By contrast, very well played Iceland. Limited resources, maximum involvement, simple plans, terrific commitment. No doubt the pressure was off - but that's no excuse for England.

I hear Boris Johnson flew out to congratulate Team England on their spectacularly effective LEAVE campaign - .... and co-opted Woy to mastermind some sort of, yah, Allright-on-the-Night plan for Post-Stability Britain.

The FA are to hold an investigation into why England did so poorly. I can save them the hassle:

The BBC interview with the Icelandic commentator after Iceland reached the round of 16 (before the match with England) is a cracker.

'So, what chance Iceland v England then'.

The humble Iceland commentator suggests that Iceland has one player that MIGHT be good enough to make the English team.

I hope they can go further.

The 'notorious bottlers' seem to be doing OK too.

So Netherlands in qualification and England in the first knockout round. Possibly the Icelanders are not as weak as they are said to be (as rubbish as both teams are). Shame that it's Iceland who has to eliminate anyone.

Bobby Charlton was asked how he thought the England team of '66 would have fared against Iceland. " I think we'd have won 1-0 " he replied. "Only 1-0?" Said the reporter. "Yes," said Bobby. "Most of us are in our 70's now!"
