Clowning

"They lurk in the woods, they watch through the darkness from roadside verges and creep up on unsuspecting victims. Were it not for the shuffle of their oversized shoes and the occasional honk from a bright red nose, you would never hear them coming.

The “clown sighting” phenomenon sweeping the US, in which pranksters wear creepy clown costumes to chase or simply stare at strangers, has gone global, and police forces say that it is no laughing matter.

A girls’ school in Essex, southeast England, was locked down this week amid reports of two clowns in the back of a black van asking pupils if they wanted to go to a birthday party. A teenager was arrested for possession of a knife in connection with a spate of clown chases in Newcastle.

Known as the “clownpocalypse”, the craze has reached a tipping point in the US with more than a dozen arrests and multiple school closures."
