Watched the whole Croatia v Argies match. Hardness of Croats v Silky ball skills of the Argies.

Messi hasn’t quite worked out how you win a World Cup for Argentina. It’s simple, you drop back to the centre circle, get the ball, beat 5 or 6 players and score. If he’s really the “world’s best player” that should be well within his capability a couple of times a game... though the handball Plan B might not be available in the VAR era.

On the other hand, hard to sympathise with Sweden.

Played the second half with minimum ambition, and little application. Didn't even mark up with any vim. A couple of not very convincing counterattacks apart, just went into fallback mode, even when 11 vs 10, and let Germany come at them, again and again.

So Germany's world cup is kick-started at the death. From elimination to virtual certainty of qualification, in 49 minutes.

Watched a bit of this one, impressed by skills on both sides ... a different league altogether to Australia and its opponents thus far (only other games I've seen).

Sweden are effectively a bunch of Championship level players, who have done well to get this far and put out Italy etc... kind of wish they had taken Zlatan, even though it would have been harsh on the players that got them there, but they have little in the way of real inspiration to call on.

Now England’s turn again... will it be “Panama Prats” on the back pages tomorrow?

England already two up. Their clash with the Belgians will be interesting. They look likely challengers for the tital.
