Re: MHR Growler
Thank you so much everybody.
Was chatting on the phone with my son - he has finally (after 5 years) submitted his 100,000+ word thesis for his Doctorate. Whoever assesses it is going to be busy for a while, as the document is over three inches thick.
I can't even begin to understand what it's about, apart from the fact that it's a possible breakthrough in temperature probes in a field of nanotechnology. So proud of him.

Re: MHR Growler
Do they call them "documents" now? *gasp*
Seriously though - well done to him! I know the pain, outbreaks of gloom, even despair and slog invested. "Don't get it right, get it written" was the only thing that kept me going near the end!

Re: MHR Growler
Thanks Peter
What was your subject, out of interest?
I'm calling it a document. I guess the proper term would be a "paper" - but to say a paper is over 3 inches thick just sounded a bit odd!
I can understand the "get it written" feeling, I'm sure it was tempting. Unfortunately, he had to manufacture and test his own measuring devices before he could get it wrapped and submitted.
Because he's in a relatively young industry, the work he and his colleagues have been doing could eventually lead to a new industry standard for the kind of temperature probes used within his field.
His main problem could be his professor finding a suitably qualified assessor = it's such a specialist field that I understand that there are only a couple of dozen or so in the whole of Europe.

German. Literature and Politics.
I was just messing about the "document", because you mentioned 3" thick ... it's probably a bound volume though, no? If it's a "proper" dissertation, which it sounds like.

Thanks all. Yep - still around, and generally well.
Have to say that life in 2020 Britain feels like a cross between Gilead and Airstrip One.
Hope everyone is OK in these strange times.
