Re: Anyone seen any good movies recently?
'The curious case of Benjamin Button' was a decent enough flick. 'The day the Earth stood still' was pretty rubbish.
I haven't seen 'Australia' yet, but I gather it was a complete flop.

Just watched Valkyrie - story of Claus von Stauffenberg.
Not bad at all, considering I can't stand Tom Cruise and most of the Nazis are cast as Brits!

Trev on the horns of a dilemma (or is that just a horn?). Does he go and see Australia so he can genuinely bag it, or does he maintain stereotype and just bag it because it has the word Australia associated with it?Henry wrote:I haven't seen 'Australia' yet, but I gather it was a complete flop.

Re: Anyone seen any good movies recently?
I just saw Slumdog Millionaire. It's a very good film. It focuses mainly on India's dark underbelly rather than the booming, rapidly growing economy that it has become in the 21st century.
Some Indians will cry foul, but i'm led to believe that the kidnapping and disfiguring of children in order to earn sympathy money does actually happen.

Only nationalistic fools I should imagine.
Dickens was writing about Londons slums at the height of the Empire for example.

It's dark, cold, pouring with rain and there's a gale blowing outside. There's no cricket on so I'm sitting watching The Ghost and Mrs Muir on Film 4. Good stuff!

Tarantino's attempt at spaghetti western - Django Unchained. The cinematography was great, some of the scenes were terrific. But overall, the movie seemed to lack something......still, an entertaining one.

Yes, you've got it. It seemed to lack depth of characters and an overall compelling narrative. Bit like a lot of scenes put together.
The last really good western I saw was True Grit. Jeff Bridges I thought was superb and his character very interesting.

I've seen 'Hitchcock' and 'The Impossible'; both ok but nothing to write home about.

Re: Anyone seen any good movies recently?
I saw 'The Impossible' today. It's well acted, but 2 hours of people despairing, crying, and screaming gets a bit much. There's some very graphic depictions of injuries, as well. It was also too focussed on the tragedies of Westerners and almost completely ignored the plight of the thousands of Thais that were killed.
Three stars.

Watched Loopers on DVD yesterday. Very average. Can't understand why it got so much critical acclaim.
Re: Anyone seen any good movies recently?
