As best I can remember young Rabbit could become the first Douglas to play for Vic since Ring in the 60s....the team has been Doug-less ever since

Re: Sheffield Shield 2023-2024
John Douglas played footy for North Melbourne.
Doug Gott also played the winter game, for Collingwood. He was the guy carted off on a stretcher in the last quarter of the 77 tied GF with a busted leg never to play again. It was his 99th game. I also remember some hoo-hah involving an umpire in his last District game before his State debut.

Sheffield Shield season 2023-2024
The season starts today with a South Australia v Tasmania match; SA has won the toss.
FC debuts for Tasmania to Mitchell Owen and Patrick Dooley, SA captaincy for Boof's lad Jake (who has long since faded from Test calculations), and lots of off-season interstate movement noted with Tassie losing stalwart Jackson Bird to NSW probably the most significant. He is clearly a like-for-like NSW replacement for Copeland given the likely absence of Starc, Hazlewood, and Cummins from the NSW squad to Test calls for much/most of the season. In this match Henry Hunt will be keen to push his credentials as Warner's successor; he will be competing with Tim Ward (Tas), Cam Bancroft (WA), Smith of NSW and of course Marcus Harris and maybe Will Pucovski from Victoria.
Go the Tozzies!

Re: Sheffield Shield 2023-2024
SA are away to a fair start, with Henry Hunt being partnered by Kelvin Smith ... who debuted for SA way back in 2013 as a 19 year old, and only returned to the SA side late last season after a 4-5 year gap. Zampa, Head, Khawaja and Joe Burns are the only other players from that match still running around on the Australian FC scene.

Re: Sheffield Shield 2023-2024
I saw that - he played a couple of WA 2nd XI games as well, I think. Never kicked on and he repeated his efforts (out when set) today.
My earlier comment about Jake Lehmann may have guaranteed him Test selection this year!! He made a fine hundred to rescue SA from 4 - not many. No other significant performances today. High scoring day overall with nearly 340 runs.

Re: Sheffield Shield 2023-2024
At one stage earlier today, Tassie reached 2-222, which would have pleased the sadly departed doyen of Australian commentators, but they have declined slightly since then … though passing the SA innings only 5 down, with 30 overs still to be bowled on d2. Jewell was an unlucky victim of the number 87, Wade and Webster made reasonable knocks, and Wally’s favourite expatriate Charlie Wakim made an impressive century - his second, from memory, after a biggie to announce his arrival on the scene a couple of years ago.
In the Dubber-Billy contest, ghe Dubbers are well on top, with tyro Jack Edwards collecting a cheap Michelle, and not much joy for the Billy bats. Rain has set in, giving the Billies an unexpected reprieve. Bird has yet to strike for his ‘new’ state.

Re: Sheffield Shield 2023-2024
Adding to Mrbucket's summary above...
Lanky Jack Edwards hit a rare purple patch with the ball today v the Banjos.
He took his maiden michelle in FC cricket today. At one stage he had 5-15 (ending day with 5-24), taking the 1st 5 Qld wickets to fall. Most were very good balls but his dismissal of Joe Burns was typical of why Monty doesn't command an Aus spot these days. A terrible no-foot-movement waft outside off that earned him a 2nd ball duck.
Qld ended a rain effected day on 7-159.

Vic played just 4 batsmen and were lucky to get as many as they did.
Thought Hardie bowled well.

Re: Sheffield Shield 2023-2024
Tozzies have SA on the ropes, effectively 7-40 in their second innings, mid day 3, but rain is falling (in Adelaide of all places). Bird has started his NSW career with two wickets, and is deeply entrenched in the top 10 Shield wicket takers of all time, at one of the lowest averages in an illustrious list of Shield wicket takers. Two decent seasons at Shield level for NSW will see him in the top 5, which is extraordinary.
QLD, sans recruit McDermott, collapsed v the Dubbers, who are well on the way to overhauling the first innings, one down. Daniel Hughes again in the runs, and potentially in the running for Warner’s spot when he vacates or is dropped.
WA v VIC yet to resume.

Re: Sheffield Shield 2023-2024
Back on in Adelaide, Sozzies seem to be a shower of the proverbial again, and Tassie only has to make 60 to win; but already they’re one down in the first over.
NSW well on top v QLD; sorry Wally.
WA has resumed v VIC and started slowly but surely, with Bancroft well set. That’ll curse him for sure!!
