World Cup 2023
50-over cricket, that is… is it still the (Men’s) Cricket World Cup, or does it now need a format qualifier in its title? Perhaps the only thing keeping the once-dominant ODI format going.
Anyway, six weeks or so out but squads already being released. Stokes returns for England, which is a bonus but very harsh on Brook for him to be the one to make way. A very old England squad (sound familiar?) with the class of ‘19 very much to the forefront once again. Only three players under 30 in the 15, with a number substantially older! Will be interesting to see Gus Atkinson who’s perhaps the Archer replacement but otherwise a very conservative selection.

Re: World Cup 2023
And a rather strange selectorial episode ends with Brook replacing Roy in the England squad. Brook found no form himself in the NZ series, but always seemed crazy to leave out his destructive potential even if it was hard to put a finger on who else should miss out. He benefited from Malan decisively claiming the second opener slot, meaning less pressure to pick Roy who’s struggling for fitness.
No idea why squads are only 15-strong for a two-month event though. Why not allow teams to bring more options along?

The Phone misses out on a second straight Yarpitulation through injury.
Is it still a Yarpitulation if nobody was ever talking their chances up in the first place? Maybe they’ll have to lose to their B team, the Dutch, to make it so.

Agar out, Marnus in, Head named in the Oz squad even though he will miss at least half of the tournament.

Re: World Cup 2023
Well, it all starts today. Can't see anyone beating India on their home turf, with a strong side and strong crowd support. Pakistan may surprise, but they usually find a catastrophic choke somewhere along the way. The rest, even England and South Africa, who should be the other semi-finalists, can I think be written off .... Australia's squad is poor, risking everything on unlikely performances from Warner and Marsh.

Stokes out of the NZ match with a hip problem to go with the knee etc etc.
Also growing horrendous ginger face; trying to outbeard Ali and Rashid?
I def prefer this format of everyone playing each other instead of dodgy groups but its a bit of a marathon.

Re: World Cup 2023
Yeah and a lot of potentially meaningless games, and failure to develop emerging (and fading) nations who miss out.
Still, after the time when India played two games and were sent packing, they’ll obviously do anything to avoid a repeat now!

Re: World Cup 2023
We'd also have had four more years with England not being world champions with a different format... and this at least ensure that all the teams play each other.
As for the non development of nations, honestly, Netherlands' army of Currie cup and Plunkett Shield players does a lot more direct damage to development of sport than this. Nepal is probably the country at that level with most organic interest in cricket.

... target achieved with just one down, and 82 balls to spare. And that's after losing Will Young to the first ball of the innings.
That's a strong start!

England v NZ done and dusted; a surprising result in one of the games that will determine which of the stronger teams make it through to the SFs. By my calculations, six wins will be essential and seven desirable to cement a place in the SFs ... given that India will likely win 8 if not all 9 of their matches, Pakistan 6-8, SAF NZ Bangles and England all 5+, with Australia, Sri Lanka, and Holland sharing the scraps (the remaining ten games). Three slip-ups and there's potentially trouble as 5-6 into 4 won't go. NRR might yet decide the fourth and even the third semi-finalist. Rain could screw a side over - shades of South Africa in 1992-3.

Re: World Cup 2023
This is probably the least interest I've seen any world cup generate. Barely a mention of it on streets or billboards. The Asian games are generating a lot more interest.
The organisation so far had been substandard, to put it mildly. Between the top teams mostly ignoring this format since 2019 and this, it's definitely starting to feel like ODIs won't exist for much longer.

England took a wicket first ball though. Our mate Zat has dubbed that a moral victory of sorts.

‘palindrome’ is a bit too direct to be his Bsils by-name, I suspect. We need at least one step of convolution, and brevity.
