Umpire resumes full nation matches

Hair returns at Old Trafford

Cricinfo staff

April 28, 2008

Darrell Hair will make his return to top-level international umpiring in the second Test between England and New Zealand at Old Trafford on May 23.

It will be the first Test he has stood in since the 2006 match between England and Pakistan at The Oval. That became the first game in history to be forfeited after Pakistan refused to take the field following Hair's ruling that they had tampered with the ball.

Hair was subsequently stood down from any matches involved full-member nations, although never officially removed from the Elite panel, but continued to stand in associate games. He took the ICC to court claiming racial discrimination, but withdrew his claims seven days into a tribunal in London last October.

He moved back to Australia and went on a six-month rehabilitation course before being reinstated at the ICC's March meeting in Dubai. Hair will stand alongside fellow Australian Simon Taufel at Old Trafford and will remain for the third Test at Trent Bridge when he'll be joined by Steve Bucknor.

It is still unclear where his long-term future lies as Pakistan have made it clear they don't want him standing in any of their matches. His current contract runs out in March 2009.

Yeah, you'd have to think he is unlikely to officiate in any games involving Pakistan, India or Sri Lanka.

Anyway, welcome back, Big D.

while he is rather painful and lacking in diplomacy he is otherwise competent as an ump.

I honestly can't see how they can bring back an Umpire who in effect will be a 'non Asian only' Umpire. Only the ICC.....

So let the "asians" bitch about the lesser quality officials appointed to 'their' matches. You know they will.

Honestly, you'd think that Darrell Hair had never made a wrong decision in his life the way some people have gone on about him since august 2006. He was/is an average umpire, imo. Knows the laws back to front, yes. But i've frequently seen him make some howlers on the field.

Umpiring around the world must be in real trouble if they have to resort to bringing back a controversial and widely disliked 60 year old instead of promoting a young and enthusiastic 35 year old to the elite panel.

Absolute bollocks.
Hair was/is an excellent umpire with a sound knowledge of the game and the Rules.
Subi teams apart, he is also highly respected as fair and impartial by the rest of the cricketing world.
As for Howlers...???
Every umpire I've seen standing in Tests, including Bird, Taufel, Willey, Venkat and Shepherd (all considered excellent umpires in their time) have committed howlers more often than not - some quite extraordinary.
Also you have to remember that technology has dominated the game for the past 5 years, thus highlighting the smallest howler committed.

Welcome back Dazza.

He could have the social skills of Jack the Ripper for all I care, so long as we get some decent, consistent umpiring.

The crowd love his antics and he is not the first "Dickie" Bird was in the same ilk.

Bird was well respected as an umpire - that gets forgotten sometimes. To be honest, his little mannerisms annoyed the bejasus out of me
