Hoggard in Lions squad to face NZ
Hoggard in the Lions squad which means Jimmykins will probably get another gig if Fred is unfit. FFS...

Re: Hoggard in Lions squad to face NZ
Luke Wright, again. Samit Patel has better batting and bowling averages than that supposed all-rounder...

Isn't Luke Wright supposed to be more a shorter version player?

Re: Hoggard in Lions squad to face NZ
If this was an ODI squad I could understand Wrights selection - his FC record is not a patch on Samits though.
Can't be too many England prospects with a FC average of 46.
my only concern over the Notts lad was his fitness, but he looked a bit fitter on TV on sunday

Luke Wright.
Fc batting average 30.68, bowling average 41.02
You don't have to do much to get a go these days do you?
Apart from play for Sussex
Wright definitely has a future in the shorter version and is improving but he shouldn't be anywhere near this squad.

There's usually one FFS! selection in a squad like this and Wright would appear to be it this time round. His time will come in the longer game, but there are better options like Patel and Hildreth at the moment.

Hildreth unlucky to be ignored.
Onions is in the England Lions team one week after being overlooked in the "Performance Squad". Are the same people doing the selection?

Re: Hoggard in Lions squad to face NZ
How come they select Mustard as the reserve test 'keeper for the NZ tour, but then leave him out of a virtual England A team a month later in favour of the discarded Matt Prior?
There's just no consistency in the selection of these 'Lions' and 'development' squads.

Maybe it's a well thought out longstanding tactic by the England selectors.
Totally random selection. It's never too late in your career, it doesn't matter about your recent form or your talent or your technical ability - everyone is in with a chance!

No, he's had his chance. He needs to score big for us and then he will have another chance.

Maybe he used to be. But since the end of last season and the beginning of this one he has been bowling beautifully.

Correct. Prior out, Mustard in, Mustard out, Prior in. Onions doesn't make the Performance squad and then gets picked for the Lions warm up game. There's no rhyme or reason to it at all and as far as I'm concerned this squad malarkey is a complete and utter waste of time. They should either expand the squads to include any player with potential or not bother with one at all.

Oh, don't say that, I missed the transfer deadline for the Cricinfo comp so instead of Hoggard I've got Kirby. Not only that, he's my captain!

Re: Hoggard in Lions squad to face NZ
It's a strong squad. I fancy them to beat NZ.
I don't have a problem with Wright being selected. He's started the season averaging 62 with the bat (1x100, 1x50) and chipping in some wickets after seemingly putting on an extra yard of pace.
He's a good pick. Potential-based, more than anything, but why not?
Key*
Carberry
Shah
Bopara
Rashid
Prior +
Wright
Tremlett
Onions
Hoggard
Kirby
Looks handy to me. Squad's probably lacking an extra batsman - Rashid, Wright and Bopara could all be described as all-rounders (to varying degrees), so it seems a bit overkill to have seven bowlers...

Re: Hoggard in Lions squad to face NZ
I agree with Jay. It's a very strong side, as Lions sides go. The majority of the side is in great form too.
Well everyone apart from Carberry and Tremlett.

Game's at the Rose Bowl - ECB probably wanted to save on travel expenses.
Re: Hoggard in Lions squad to face NZ
Let's be honest though, the whole side's bollocks. It should be about blooding youngsters and assessing the odd older player's progress. If the selectors really need to watch Owais Shah and Matthew Hoggard again, they're ****** retarded. They ought to be looking at other, younger players. I can understand them looking closely at Key given that he has been away from the setup for a while.
I can't understand why Prior's in there, seeing how nothing will have changed in five months. I can't understand why Kirby, who will never, ever be good enough to play for England, is in there. I'd much rather they had a look at Hildreth, Harris, Davies and Patel and actually make it seem that there's no impenetrable, exclusive club made up of Peter Moores' Favourite Sussex Players and Other Retards.

Key? Nowhere near the England captaincy. Collingwood and Cook are next in line.
