Is it time to start thinking about the ODI captaincy post-Ponting? He's been in the team for 13 years, and turns 34 during the next home summer? Taylor played his last ODI at 32, Waugh at 36.

Unbelievable fall, considering he is someone who could make an all-time world ODI eleven. Certainly an Australian one.

Amazing that Tugga got the arse when averaging 44. That means he's a great, don't you know.

I remember Waugh blowing away the cobwebs and rolling his arm over at a jamodi at the WACA in 2002 in a desperate bid to prove that he wasn't a washed up old hack. Axed soon after....

Re: Ponting, Waugh, Taylor - last 12 ODI innings
I am glad to see the team still winning matches without relying on Ponting.
They may be able to do without his captaincy soon.Clark needs more experience, and he will get it when they rest Ponting during the next year or so.
Ponting would not have been looking at going on for much longer in ODIs in my opinion.
He is getting on,has back troubles, and is due to be a father shortly,I'm guessing his priorities will change.

Re: Ponting, Waugh, Taylor - last 12 ODI innings
Completely unrelated but interesting nevertheless. Ages of Australian players during next Ashes:
Jacques (30)
Hayden (37 going on 38 )
Ponting (34 going on 35)
Hussey (34)
Clarke (28 )
Symonds (34)
Haddin (31)
Casson (26)
Johnson (27)
Lee (32 going on 33)
Clark (33 going on 34)
Average age: 31.45
I'm not sure Hayden (injuries), Johnson (form), Casson (ability), Haddin (competition) or Jacques (Katich) will even be there.
Could potentially give England a glimmer of a chance if age catches up with one or two of them. What am I saying? 5-0 Australia.

Hayden and Ponting are both starting to creak. Quite badly in Hayden's case. The way Lee bowls, he's probably got another 3 years at most left in him. I'd compare him to Allan Donald in bowling style and athletic ability, and Donald was past his best by 2000, and out of the game by early 2003, when he was 36. Clark should be around for another 2-3 years, as he doesn't really put any great stress on his body.
They've got a LOT of players in the 32-33 age range.

Interesting analysis Zoggy, but I reckon it's just an extended dry spell in the short form of the game. I'll be amazed if Punter doesn't captain Aus in another 40 or more JAMODIs.

3 tons in his last 3 Tests. Yup, terrible.

So, until late 2009 then skully? That would give a replacement plenty of time to settle in to the job for the 2011 WC.skully wrote:Interesting analysis Zoggy, but I reckon it's just an extended dry spell in the short form of the game. The Aussie selectors haven't been as forgiving of form slumps by captains in the shoirter form of the game as they have in Tests. I believe the thinking is that if a skipper's form drops off in ODIs it can become an issue that impacts on his Test performance, so make the change in the short game to allow him to improve or maintain his form in the matches that matter, while giving his probable replacement the chance to get some leadership experience.

Yeah Zog. I would think that Punter may well be gone (from the JAMODIs at least) by the time WC 2011 rolls around, so the Kid should be given some time at the helm before we attempt to defend the Gilly.

Hi skully!
Don't you think Australia would need Ponting's experience especially when even Hayden won't be around and Mike Hussey won't be a young fellow either?

Hey Chandan.
I think going on for 37 Punter may be creaking a bit by the time WC 2011 comes around. As Zat says, Aus has a history of jettisoning it's ODI captain sooner rather than latter. I think Punter may find himeslf in a similar position to Steve Waugh leading into the next World Cup. He either steps down or is pushed.
I could be wrong, but history says I'm more likely to be correct, and Michael Clarke will lead Australia at WC 2011.

Re: Ponting, Waugh, Taylor - last 12 ODI innings
I had one more question.
In Australia, Emerging Players' Tournament has been organised. Do you know what Australia's squad is? I could find India's and SA's but Australian squad was not on cricinfo. And apparently, the players have already assembled at Brisbane.

Of the current Aus ODI XI, only the following are likely to be around come WC 2011:
Michael Clarke
Shaun Marsh
James Hopes
Cameron White
Mitchell Johnson
Luke Ronchi
Maybe:
Brett Lee
Andrew Symonds
Mike Hussey
Nathan Bracken

Sorry Chandan. I can't find anything on the likely Aus line up either. The Cricket Australia site doesn't seem to have anyhting on the tournament other than the draw.Chandan wrote:I had one more question.

Very strange, isn't it? Four top teams of emerging players will be competing and there is hardly any coverage!
