Their sports minister even wants a bet with ours on the basis that they'll win more gold than us.
Should be done a population pro rata basis though.
Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and South Africa are the underperformers though among the commonwealth cricket nations when it comes to the Olympics when you factor in population size.
Give us the figures, then.
Starting with the number of full size swimming pools you have...
Unfair, JKL, we ain't afraid of water . . .
Or bothered to get new one liners either, it seems...

Re: The Olympics Thread
GB Athletics got government funding of £40 million over 5 years from 2003-2008. This is from the Sport England website. Aus got around the $125 million mark of government funding over the period of 2006/07. This is from the Australian Committee of Sport website.
Converting the GB amount, it reads as about $86 million. Year by year, that works out as a discrepancy of about $45 million. Ally that to the differences in the cost of living and that's pretty big.

I'm pretty sure that Oz spent more per medal than any/most other nation(s) at the last few olympics . . .

Worth it? They fare pretty well, as red says, per capita. The AIS seems to have been a very positive thing, since Aus' Montreal debacle.

Yep. Not sure it's really worth it, though . . . I'd happily not have us win a medal if the money was spent on education and health . . .

Yeah, I know what you're saying, but it must have some positive affects in a contributary way. Personally, I'm surprised we spend so little on it. Most of our past success stories have been off the back of private sponsorship or our athlete's own funding.

The Aussie girl in the judo got pipped in the semi to the eventual winner and then pipped again in the bronze playoff.

I'm pretty sure Australia has one of the highest amounts of funds per capita when it comes to sport. Which definitely pays off as we punch well above our weight in the Olympics when you look at the populations.
