Re: Who are the 5 greatest songwriters of all-time?
Thing is, I'm not constantly coming out with wank like "Ronaldinho is shit" or "Robbie Williams is better than Dylan" just to get attention. So when I do say "Elvis is ridiculously overrated", I might actually think that's true.
And the thing is, I said the Libertines were one of the best bands of the past decade. Which they are. Sorry if you don't agree.
I've never read a music magazine in my life.

You can like who you want, obviously. It simply alludes to your lack of judgement in this regard.
Re: Who are the 5 greatest songwriters of all-time?
I never once said Robbie Williams is better than Dylan and it wasn't just for attention. I wanted to genuinly know for what reasons the educated posters amongst us thought some writers are better than others.
That's all.
That's all.

I'm not overly fussed what you think. Can't see why you think it 'coz their class b ut it's all a bit "meh".

You care about what I think so much so you tug on your nards when I disagree.
Re: Who are the 5 greatest songwriters of all-time?
Yeah, you're right. That would explain my pendulum balls. All that tugging.

There's a programme on at the moment about Fleetwood Mac. I've never decided if I like their stuff or not.

Weezer's Only In Dreams has one of the best crescendos I've heard. If I could post the Youtoob from here I would. Boring vid, being as it's guitar hero but still...

Nominations I've not seen mentioned: Richard Thompson, Paul Brady, John Prine, Van Morrison and Stevie Wonder.

ten years after wrote:David Bowie rates a mention. Personally i don't like much of his work after Aladdin Sane but those 5 albums in the early 70s were very impressive.
Eric Air Emu wrote:Can't see any sign of Bowie and Lou Reed on this thread. They're legendary songwriters.
Right up there with Sting.

I was a massive fan of Bowie as a teenager and still play his early stuff to this day. As good as his music is though I've got my doubts about him being a good songwriter. While pulling random words out of a hat to form his lyrics was certainly unique, it just didn't seem right to me.
Btw, I spent years trying to get my hair like this, without doubt the finest hairstyle the world of music has ever seen.
Eric Air Emu wrote:Don't agree with that- at least at his peak in the Ziggy years his songs really told stories and had poetic quality (Five years, Rock 'n Roll suicide, Quicksand, God Knows I'm good, Man who sold the world, Life on Mars just off the top of my head). Never bought into the Berlin/Eno years or really anything after that but up to Diamond Dogs - great musician, outstanding lyricist and general demigod.
Like I said up there with Sting.
Geoffrey Trueman wrote:Eric Air Emu wrote: Never bought into the Berlin/Eno years or really anything after that but up to Diamond Dogs - great musician, outstanding lyricist and general demigod.
No argument from me Eric, thas a man after my own heart. Anyway, I think you misunderstood me, to be honest I don't care how he wrote his songs I loved everything about them. I just think the way he constructed his lyrics (that's if the documentary I saw is to be believed) was a bit odd, but hey, if he hadn't done it that particular way he might not have been the demi-god you and I think he was.
Brass Monkey wrote:Oh, I'll apologise now to Bowie for not even raising a mention out of me. The man is supreme.
And I'll concur about Frank Black - so many quality tunes, not just with the Pixies. Or Black Francis.
