Thursday 23 October 2008

The Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA) is delighted to have secured the Rambal Family as the major sponsor and naming rights partner of the WA state men’s cricket team for the historic Champions League Twenty20 tournament.

The team will be known as the Rambal Warriors and will travel to India for the inaugural tournament to be played from 3-10 December 2008.
The Warriors qualified for the $US6 million tournament after reaching the final of the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash earlier this year.
The Rambal Warriors will now compete for the $US3 million first prize purse alongside reigning KFC Twenty20 Big Bash champions Victoria, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings (India), Titans and Dolphins (South Africa), Middlesex (England) and Sialkot (Pakistan).
WACA Chief Executive Officer Graeme Wood said Vikas Rambal, Chairman and Managing Director of North West Chemicals and Fertilisers Pty Ltd, has a genuine passion for the game of cricket and has been eager to work with the WACA to help develop the game in Western Australia.
“It’s a tremendous result for the WACA to partner with a family with such an enormous enthusiasm for cricket and strong links to the sub continent,” he said.
“The Rambal Family is already a proud supporter of the WACA and the extension of their commitment is a tremendous result for Western Australian cricket as well as further strengthening the ties between us.
“There is great synergy between the Warriors and the Rambal Family, and the players are looking forward to doing Western Australia proud when they take the field this December.
“We are also grateful to Retravision, the major sponsor and naming rights partner of the Warriors for more than five seasons, for allowing us the opportunity to secure another naming rights partner for this historic tournament.”
The Rambal Family joined the WACA as a major sponsor in 2007-08, supporting Warriors Manager and Head Coach Tom Moody and becoming the Association’s Entertainment Partner for events such as the WACA’s Test Match Luncheon and the Premier Cricket Awards. The extension of that commitment to the WA state men’s team for the Champions League Twenty20 tournament is a major achievement for the WACA.
“We are very proud to expand our relationship with cricket in Western Australia – and our involvement in this historic competition being staged in India provides the perfect platform,” said Vikas Rambal.
“Investing back into our community and into this great game of cricket is obviously a very real commitment for us and we’re very pleased to have been able to create opportunities for the WACA and the Western Australian players.
“We look forward to an exciting summer of local, national and international cricket, and to some outstanding performances from Western Australia in particular.”
Rambal Warriors Captain Marcus North said the playing group appreciated the support provided to them by Vikas Rambal and the Rambal Family.
“To be successful on the field, we need solid backing off the pitch and we are extremely pleased that Vikas Rambal and the Rambal Family have extended their support of cricket in Western Australia and are sponsoring the team,” North said.
“The boys are looking forward to the challenge of representing Western Australia on a global stage and are confident that we will do the State and our partners, including the Rambal Family, proud in the Champions League Twenty20.
“Vikas is an extremely passionate man when it comes to cricket and if some of that can rub off on us, then I am sure we will go wonderfully well in India!”
The Champions League Twenty20 tournament and the eight competing teams will be officially launched at a function in Delhi later today. Mr Rambal’s Indian-based brother, Manoj Rambal will join Warriors and Australian batsman Michael Hussey to represent the Rambal Warriors at the event.</TD>

</TD></TR></TABLE>Vikas Rambal was born in Delhi, India, in 1967.
A qualified chemical engineer, Mr Rambal spent the first years of his career working with Bharat Petroleum (formerly Shell) and was then involved in a range of projects including refineries and the manufacture of fertilisers.
Mr Rambal moved to Perth in 2001 with his wife Maegha and sons Ishan, 10 and Vashist, 8, to explore new business ventures in Western Australia and other parts of the world.
Cricket has long been a passion in the Rambal family and Vikas and his sons are avid followers of local, national and international cricket.
Mr Rambal has been a valued partner of the WACA since 2007, supporting Warriors Manager and Head Coach Tom Moody and coming on board as the Association’s Entertainment Partner for events such as the WACA’s Test Match Luncheon and the Premier Cricket Awards.
He is a member of the Dennis Lillee Club at the WACA and both Ishan and Vashist have attended junior clinics at the WACA.
Mr Rambal’s Indian-based brother, Manoj Rambal, is also a passionate cricket fan, keen to see the family become involved in supporting cricket in Western Australia.</TD>

</TD></TR></TABLE>Twenty20 cricket has set the cricketing world on fire since its introduction in England in 2003. This revolutionary new format of limited overs cricket has created a game for a traditionally ‘non cricket’ audience with its fast pace, big hitting and all compacted into a consumer friendly three hour package.
The first game of interstate Twenty20 cricket in Australia was hosted by the WACA in January 2005 and featured Western Australia and Victoria. It is almost fitting that these two teams are to be the first Australian representatives in the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 tournament.

Being a part of the excitement of international Twenty20 cricket cannot be underestimated. The hype, energy, interest and outcomes of the Indian Premier League (IPL) competition showed just how popular this game is, not only in the sub continent, but with interest from cricketing fans around the world.

  • The Champions League Twenty20 tournament is a major cricket event featuring the leading domestic Twenty20 teams from around the world
  • The eight teams competing in the Champions League Twenty20 have earned the right to participate by excelling in their respective domestic Twenty20 competitions
  • In September 2007, it was announced that finalists from the upcoming domestic Twenty20 competitions in Australia, South Africa, India and England would qualify for the inaugural Champions League Twenty20
  • The Rambal Warriors were defeated in the final of the 2007-08 KFC Twenty20 Big Bash – Australia’s domestic Twenty20 tournament – by the Victorian Bushrangers, however both teams would qualify for inaugural Champions League Twenty20
  • In April, the Centurion-based Titans and Durban-based Dolphins became the third and fourth teams to qualify for Champions League Twenty20 by reaching the final of South Africa’s Standard Bank Pro20 competition
  • The inaugural Indian Premier League was held in April and May 2008 to decide which two teams would qualify for Champions League Twenty20 from India. The Rajasthan Royals from Jaipur and the Chennai Super Kings earned their places by reaching the IPL final in Mumbai
  • In June it was announced that only one team from England – Middlesex (2008 Twenty20 Cup champions) would take part in Champions League Twenty20, while the champions of Pakistan’s domestic Twenty20 competition – Sialkot – would claim the eighth and final place in the tournament
  • The tournament will be held in India from 3-10 December. Final confirmation of venues will be known in the coming days.
  • The draw for the inaugural Champions League Twenty20 is due to take place in Delhi later today
  • The overall prize money for the Champions League Twenty20 will be $US6 million, with the winners taking home $US3 million
  • In future years, it is hoped that the tournament grows to include teams from other cricket nations, such as New Zealand, Sri Lanka and the West Indies

Always thought it odd and imbalanced that Aus, SA and India have 2 teams each in the final, whilst Eng only had the one - just so as to accommodate a Pak XI !!
And where's the tournament taking place?
In England FFS!

I'm okay with that only because Middlesex won the T20 here - but I reckon the Kent mob would be gutted!
Neither Stanford (again quashed at the last minute) and no Champions T20 for a team who are ideal T20 ers!
