Where was the crowd?
Let me get this straight.
A test match between the two best nations in the world could go either way. There's two sessions of cricket to look forward to. The weather's beautiful. It's Sunday and the match isn't on tele.
Why then were there only a few thousand people at the WACA today?
I love test matches in Perth because it means an East Coaster like myself can watch cricket into the night. But if that's the best you can do for a Test Match like this then Perth's future as a major test city must come into question.
Adelaide has traditonally been the third major cricket city in Australia - there's a strong case for giving them their place back.

If the game isn't a sell out, then the host City doesn't get live coverage until the third session.

The game was moved, started on a Wednesday and was rain affected.
55,000 is a disappointing turn out but still more then the Adelaide Test got.

How many would Perth have got if Aus were playing New Zealand and not South Africa?

...classical tosh from the neuron bypassed sheethead...the adelaide match was against NZ dummy ...further it became evident during the last day's play that there were more ex-pat saffies in the crowd than Oz folk...Perth should be on the top end tours and not get summer series..
while the G's pitch is likely to be another flat track, at least there will be a crowd and most will be Aussies.

It is disappointing, nonetheless. Surely it is not true that Australians are sore losers who only show up if guaranteed a win.

i can guarantee Melbourne will provide bumper crowds...weather is looking ace too!!...sydney will prolly also a produce a decent crowd even if (as I expect) we cop a flogging in the boxing day test

Re: Where was the crowd?
Perth has long struggled to draw a decent crowd for Tests. I would like to know what the ADD rate is over there.

Oh, and anyone who thought that the game was in the balance on the last day doesn't know shit about cricket.

So you're going to promote them past Perth and Brisbane?

So where were you on the last day of the match? In fact, on how many days did you use you WACA membership???Invader Zim wrote:

Aye - a few of us will go specifically to demand Ricky Ponting's sacking as captain.

Re: Where was the crowd?
the Oz Day tests used to get very good crowds there and the crepe pitch would guarantee 5 days.
punter implied there was little difference in the nature of the adelaide and waca pitches

Re: Where was the crowd?
A couple of years back there was talk of Perth possibly losing its test to Hobart because of the sparse crowds. It did dwindle yesterday as we moved inexorably towards defeat. It may have been on tv, in Melbourne the whole day's play is now telecast regardless of the crowd. It was part of a new agreement struck between Channel Nine and CA two years ago.

I had to work on the Wednesday, but I went on days 2-4 and used my guest pass to bring a 'guest' for those days as well. I had a birthday party to go to on Sunday...Zat wrote:So where were you on the last day of the match? In fact, on how many days did you use you WACA membership???Invader Zim wrote:

Er, chasing down the 2nd highest total in the history of test cricket, against the world no 1's in their home country?
Obviously I know shit.

Re: Where was the crowd?
The current Australian team bears very little resemblance to the team that took it to number 1.
They're just hanging in there, by the fingernails.
I think India, South Africa, and Australia are very close currently. England, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan are down a notch, NZ and West Indies are striving to catch them from the third tier, and then there are the dregs.

Maybe we had some hope until lunchtime ... but the pitch was a road. Curators are killing bowling, IMHO.

Fark! The only good thing about Perth is the view from a 747.
