Oh yeah, great news I don't think!
Mike Gatting to be given England role - possible selector?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/england/7023026.stm
This I take it, is the same Gatting that said Graham Thorpe had nothing to offer England apart from his average of 45?
Or the same Gatting that held a grudge against 19year old Nasser Hussain for the rest of his career?

Re: Oh yeah, great news I don't think!
Gatting will look after domestic cricket, acting as a bridge between those involved at all levels of the game from the counties downwards.
Ah, there we go - they're going to utilise his physical girth: lay him down across a river.
Although I would've said he was more speed-bumpy than bridgey, but what do I know?
Re: Oh yeah, great news I don't think!
Oh FFS!!!!!
That should've been the end of him - that Thorpe remark.
The bloke's an arrogant prick and what's worse, he's Middx. Which generally makes him a one-eyed cnut. Robot, Test Match: Pad up, you're in.

Look Merlin, he's a fat arrogant sh!t, he's a clueless tosser. With all this in mind, limited, bullsh!t players such as Dalrobot and Sh!t Choyce will get another look in. Why? Because they don't bring runs and wickets 'to the table' but they do bring biscuits, cheese and vin rouge.

Can't do that. Last time he went for a lay down in the midlands, Cheltenham was under water for a week.

Well yeah, we'd have to take two less tourists as well - he'd eat their food and then some. Thank the stars for the Sky budget. We'd soon be bankrupt.

Agree with "he's a fat arrogant sh!t" (not unlike Sales tbh) - but would disagree with clueless. One of the very few captains to have brought back the Ashes - and taken on the Establishment with the Shakhoor Rama incident. Outspoken and brash certainly - but a bloody strong bulldog character whose players sweat blood for him.
More than you can say of the latest shower we've had, ....
This appointment finally brings him back into the frontline (after some 15 years) where he should be - offering his vast experience to the current lightweight management structure.
And belay your fears Fink - he is no supporter of Rymple and reJoyce ... quite the contrary actually - trust me on that!

Re: Oh yeah, great news I don't think!
1. Sales isn't arrogant.
2. ANY bloke who asks "What does Graham Thorpe 'bring to the table' apart from runs" must be clueless, especially given the context of only Stewart and Nasser averaging over 40 at the time and the fact he had an 'even' record.
3. Agree with the captaincy thing etc. But if he can't judge someone of Thorpe's calibre as a must then refer to point 2, as what he did whilst playing has no relevance anymore. If he was that judicious, he wouldn't have been on a rebel tour to SA saying: "I know nothing of Apartheid, I'm just here to play cricket". What a w@nk statement that is!

Lack of a brain cell does tend to induce a three worded sentence peppered with full stops.
Comprehend and keep up please.

1. Agree re Sales ... I was just tweaking you. Frankly, with Gatt's input, players like Sales WILL get a look in on a side stacked with favorites ...
2. Re Thorpe - yep, cannae deny - he farked up with that comment (Slurrey phobia I guess) - but it was uttered at a time when Torpe was dicking around with the "shall I tour, shan't I tour" - and the comment was made more through frustration than as a reflection of GT's ability. One other fact here - whereas AS and NH did contribute vocally and with bat, GT was invariably always a silent partner who went about his business with very little input - tbh. Great player, nevertheless.
3. The rebel tour was, at the time, extremely attractive financially - and 46 cricketers fell into the honey pot. Yes it was a w@nk statement - uttered by other prominent members of that side as well - one of whom is the present Chairman of Selectors!!
Extract from the Guardian Feb 14th 1990

Addressing a press conference yesterday, Dr Bacher, team manager David Graveney, and captain Mike Gatting ...

DG was absolved and embraced by the ECB and has reigned supreme for 10 years .... Gatting was made out as the pariah and as Peter Hain's scapegoat.

Gatting is similar to Gooch in that he's very much a "My way or the highway" sort of character. Fine if you've got a team of robots, but not so good if the team is full of human beings with differing personalities.

Re: Oh yeah, great news I don't think!
Wasn't Gatting one of the selectors responsible for the utter debacle that was the New Zealand series in '99? Perhaps the lowest of all lowpoints. The entire board should have been sacked for that one. At one stage we selected a Test team of:
Atherton, Maddy, Hussain, Thorpe, Stewart, Ramprakash, Irani, Caddick, Mullally, Tufnell, Giddens
And judging by Nasser's comments Thorpe was lucky to make that team and if Gatting had his way they probably would have given Aftab Habib another chance.

Merlin, fair do's. I don't think that damning him with the faint praise of David Graveney will do much good for your argument with me. I loathe the bloke above all else, think he's a p!ss-poor yes-man selector and generally a little weasel of a bloke who I feel only has a negative impact on the whole of English cricket.

David Graveney has done a brilliant job......Of managing to keep his job for all these years whilst other, more worthy characters have been sacked. He's absolutely brilliant at self preservation.

He's been Englands chairman of selectors for almost 11 years. It's almost like a dictatorship.
