Okay, but the surrounding cricket factors all contribute to the legitimacy of a ball. If a fielder is outside the circle, then the ball should be deemed illegal and you cannot be out from it.

I quite agree.
But you are using the can-opener so vigorously, the worms are cascading and squiggling around all over the place.

Isn't there an even less theoretical scenario than that? Currently, it doesn't seem that no balls are checked for unless there is a referral.
How about the guy bowled middle stump of a no ball that isn't called? There is surely enough time to review that as the batsman is walking off.

Actually mandatory fieldsmen in the circle only applies to one dayers, so it might be a mute point for test cricket.
Although, I think there has to be a certain amount of fielders on either side of the wicket, due to the Bodyline issue.
There simply isn't enough time to check for all these factors in anycase during a referral. I guess that should just be left to the square leg umpire.

Why not?
Batsman only walk on bowled because it is the way things are done.
An umpire still has to put the finger up for bowled dismissals. Hence the batsmen can still dispute the umpire's decision.

You'd do it if you were 8 down and you had 2 referrals left.

If I had a challenge remaining, and two runs to win the World Cup and only one wicket left, and I got bowled, I sure as hell would refer if. Goose or not.

in that scenario you would be a goose if you didnt. its not been introduced in odis yet has it
if at any time the number of referrals left is more than or equal to the wickets left you have to use them

This was discussed on the Sky coverage yesterday. The One wrote:i wonder if the batsman can call for a referral for bowled. or is it only limited to certain decisions?
It seems that teams are now instructing the non-striking batsman to keep an eye out for no-balls in the event the
striking batsman does get bowled.
If that happens, ie., a no-ball not called by the umpire and the batsman gets bowled or indeed caught off that "ball" - and no referral is requested by either batsmen, then regardless, the batsman is OUT.
As the batsman walks off, Sky re-runs or 3rd umpire re-runs showing the no-ball after the event can not be accepted or change the verdict unless the challenge/referral was requested immediately after the batsman was bowled/caught.

Say a batsman is bowled, but the batsman notices a the bowler was outside the return crease that was not picked up by the umpire.
If the batsman refers it, the 3rd ump can.
He's far from crocked or gone - the ball that got Sarwan showed that to me.
Decent ball, but that was more Sarwan's bad lazy shot that led to him being out.

Sometimes you have to love Witless CrocInfo:
9.30am Morning all and welcome to the fifth and final day's coverage from Barbados. Will Luke here, and we're all set for what ought to be a straightforward day for England. There. I've said it. The weather is fine (an early shower passed some time ago) and, if you need reminding of the match situation, England are trailing by 143. The pitch is flatter than my mother's ironing board but, well, this is England and a calamitous collapse cannot be ruled out.

A pom collapse would just about be the perfect end to the day . . . . (I guess it's rude to hope India sinks into the ocean?)
