New South Wales All-Time XI
This has been done before, but seeing as there are threads on the Barbados and Surrey equivalents...
STATE OF ORIGIN
1. Bob SIMPSON
2. Arthur MORRIS
3. Don BRADMAN
4. Victor TRUMPER
5. Allan BORDER
6. Adam GILCHRIST (w/k)
7. Richie BENAUD (c)
8. Alan DAVIDSON
9. Ray LINDWALL
10. Bill O'REILLY
11. Glenn McGRATH
STATE MOST ASSOCIATED WITH
1. Sid BARNES
2. Arthur MORRIS
3. Don BRADMAN
4. Victor TRUMPER
5. Steve WAUGH
6. Keith MILLER (c)
7. Alan DAVIDSON
8. Bert OLDFIELD (w/k)
9. Ray LINDWALL
10. Bill O'REILLY
11. Glenn McGRATH
McCabe, Macartney and Bardsley all have claims on the number five spot, but I went with Waugh as a direct "like-for-like" replacement for Allan Border.

NSW have done very well haven't they. I suppose it's been between them and Barbados for the world championship (though Yorkshire might give them a run).
Surely Simpson was a better bat than Morris.
Oldfield is the best keeper ever so must get that spot in both teams.
Turner, Spofforth, Noble and Jack Gregory are among many who would fit more than capably in any greatest XI bowling line up. Just shows the depth.

aye. That's a great line up. My only contention would be your preference for Gilchrist's batting over Oldfield's keeping....... and we're not going to resolve that one.

I agreee - Simmo over Morris or Barnes in the second team there.
The bowling is stunning.

Mick, in that team you probably need Gilly to balance the team with his batting . . . if you drop a bowler and add nother specialist bat, then go for Oldfield . . .

Re: New South Wales All-Time XI
The 7, 8 & 9 (if not, he went bloody close) all scored Test hundreds and don't forget that the # 3 counts for two batsmen. Nothing much worse than a keeper squandering what could have been a pole.

With Bradman in the team a 6 to 9 of Benaud, Davidson, Lindwall and Oldfield is pretty good. Alternatively Noble or Jack Gregory could bat at 6.
The quality of the bowling line up deserves the best keeper available.

As much as it pains me . . . he wuld be the one to go . . . but only to play Oldfield.
I'd rather have Richie and Gilly.
But to be honest, as Gilly played most of his cricket for WA, let's drop him and bat Oldfield at 9 . . .

TBH I don't think KDW offers anything as a batsman over Gilly. My team would have the best keeper & I'd consider leaving the WC at 6 for away games, resting Richie and then doing a straight swap for SCG matches.

Almost always.
I think if there is a choice between two all time great keepers but the lesser of the two is a better bat then he may still get the nod. I would still pick Ames or Knott ahead of Duckworth for England for instance.
There are times when it is expedient to break the rule. Alec Stewart over Strudwick for instance due to Surrey's lack of a great bowler who can bat. Also the Barbados team doesn't have a great keeper. If the choice is between Courtney Browne and Clyde Walcott i'm afraid I will go for the lesser keeper.

Mick, if were playing any all-time Windies combination, you'd want Dougie in there . . . drop for games in England . . .

No (other than for the 2nd XI). I guess that ends the argument about whether he should be the NSW best XI keeper.

I thought not. He didn't do much for NSW in front of the stumps, either.

Re: New South Wales All-Time XI
I'd choose:
Simpson, Barnes, Bradman, McCabe, Trumper. Macartney, Davidson, Lindwall, Oldfield, O'Reilly, McGrath.
A second XI might look like:
Morris, Bardsley, Border, S.Waugh, Noble, Benaud, Gilchrist, Gregory, Thomson, Turner, Mailey.
NSW might not beat Barbados, but has tremendous depth. A second eleven would strongly challenge the first team from most other states/counties/provinces.

Re: New South Wales All-Time XI
You really think they wouldn't beat Barbados? I reckon Tiger would be the trump card in that match?
Agree re the second XI - I think it would beat the Surrey XI mentioned on the other thread.

Dougie's great numbers against the Windies were prior to the era beginning with Roberts...... Dougie would beat up on the likes of Vanburn Holder ffs. Guess that makes him about even with the WC in terms of the talent he confronted.
