CA Contracts
Fresh faces join list
14 May, 2009
Matt Cenin for Cricket.com.au
Australia celebrates a wicket in South Africa There are some happy young cricketers across the country today after the Cricket Australia National Selection Panel (NSP) announced the 2009-10 contracted player list, including seven new players.
The average age of the list has dropped from 29 down to 28, with Phillip Hughes (20), Callum Ferguson (24), Peter Siddle (24), Andrew McDonald (27), Marcus North (29) and Graham Manou (30) all added.
The retired Matthew Hayden and Stuart MacGill have departed, along with Beau Casson, Phil Jaques, Ashley Noffke, Shaun Tait and Adam Voges, who did not have their contracts renewed for the coming season.
NSP Chairman Andrew Hilditch said the contract list was selected with a very careful eye on the future of Australian cricket.
“The NSP is extremely happy with this 25-strong contract list,” Hilditch said.
“It’s obviously an important time for Australian cricket with the Ashes on the horizon. (Although) I can’t talk specifically about Ashes selection today as that will be finalised next Wednesday morning.
“It’s obviously a very exciting time for players receiving their first contract, such as Phillip Hughes, who has had an outstanding start for Australia and will have an important role in the team’s future.
“Peter Siddle has had an outstanding debut season and richly deserves his contract. Andrew McDonald, Marcus North and Nathan Hauritz have been rewarded for their performances in South Africa and Nathan had an excellent one-day tournament against Pakistan recently.
Hilditch also said that the next World Cup in the subcontinent was in the mind of selectors.
“With respect to one-day cricket, we’re building towards the 2011 ICC World Cup and that was strong in our thoughts when finalising this list,” he said.
“Callum Ferguson has had an impressive debut in one-day cricket and will be an important part of our future in that form of the game. He’ll be looking to take every opportunity to force his way into Test cricket.”
South Australia wicket-keeper Graham Manou’s good work at state level has seen him rewarded with a CA contracted, supporting current gloveman Brad Haddin.
“Graham Manou has been named as the other wicket-keeper on the list. No-one can doubt his credentials following his performance in state cricket over the last two seasons, in all forms of the game.”

Manou is a better keeper, but an inferior batsman to Haddin. Looks like Australia could be having their own 'Read-Jones/Prior' debate in the future.

Also, it must surely be Jason Krezja's attitude, rather than a lack of talent, that has kept him off the list. On the face of it, he has been very hard done by, but it's long been rumoured that he's a hot head.

Re: CA Contracts
Tait may be feeling miffed given that he was prevented from earning money in the IPL but has now found out that his contract with CA won't be renewed.
Voges missing a tour because of the nuptials may have cost him.

Re: CA Contracts
He is indeed miffed.
It's easy for him to downgrade test cricket though given that he said he was 'buggered' after one over of a T20 match.
Melbourne: Out of favour fast bowler Shaun Tait agreed to sacrifice Indian Premier League riches thinking of future rewards but after being denied a central contract he now feels humiliated by Cricket Australia.
Tait believes he was fit enough to play in IPL in South Africa for Rajasthan Royals, but he was restricted by CA medical staff from doing so, thereby depriving him of $375,000.
A blow
He then suffered the blow of not having his central contract renewed, and was clearly annoyed to be told he was still in the scheme of things despite not being offered a contract.
“When you think you’re ready to go and play, I thought they (CA) had me in mind for future tournaments, so that was fair enough at the time, but to not let you go, then not pick you in a squad then not give you a contract is a little bit of a kick in the teeth,” Tait said.
However, Australia’s National Selection Panel chief Andrew Hilditch said Tait remained in CA’s scheme of things and could be considered for the one-day series that follows the Ashes in September but the injury-prone fast bowler wasn’t amused by the carrot.
“It’s pretty easy for CA to say ‘get yourself ready for a tournament’ when they haven’t given you a contract — I could quite easily duck off to the Greek islands for a couple of months if I wanted to.
“But I’ll keep myself fit, keep bowling and if something does come up, well that’d be good,” he said.
Furious
The pacer was furious on Hilditch’s public pronouncement that he took the news well.
“Digger’s (Hilditch) trying to sugar-coat that to be honest,” he said.
Tait will go to England for a holiday before coming back to South Australia to focus on the limited-over format.
“It’s no secret that I’m trying to concentrate on the shorter form of the game and from what’s happened on Thursday, being dropped off a contract, it probably frees me up a bit more to do that,” Tait said.
“I’m still going to be hopefully contracted to the SACA here, but I can explore other options with the shorter form of the game.
“Four-day cricket is a fair way out of my mind at the present moment,” Tait was quoted by the Australian Associated Press.
Playing future
His playing future looked like closely tied to the shorter versions of the game, Tait also supported the view of Chris Gayle, who said he “wouldn’t be so sad if Test cricket dies and Twenty20 comes in.”
Big call
“It’s a pretty big call coming from a Test captain, pretty amusing really, but I think he’s probably spot-on.
“Two years ago we didn’t have those options but now the Twenty20 stuff has really kicked off.” — PTI

I saw most of the interview , Lardy...He was pretty spot on about the shit treatment he got from CA ...if they are going to tell players they can't play in tin pot side tournaments where the players can earn shit loads of money then they need to compensate them in return

Re: CA Contracts
Maybe ... but was 4-day cricket a long way from his mind when he took their advice not to play in the tinpot tournament, or is that just a petulant reaction?
Sounds like he'll vote with his feet and go play 20-20, permanently. No great loss IMO. He can bowl 2 spells of two overs, collect the cash, and forget serious cricket long term. 20-20 viewers interested in speed and occasional flying stumps will be satisfied and he'll be happy too.
He was never going to cut it at Test level, so Hilditch has done him a favour.

Tait could (injuries and mental fragility permitting) play the IPL for the next 7 years then qualify for another Test nation...
In other words, his international career's f*cked.

Nope! he's already played tests for you - that effectively debars him for representing anyone else.
In any case, we've got enough of our own dead wood without inheriting yours!

I think, JGK, that Mr Seal is referring to the "unwritten" law of not selecting players who have played for another nation . . .

Is there a list of players who have played for two nations, say since 1960?
... not just in Tests, but at say U 19 level and above, and in ODIs?
