New "Collapsible" Australian Team
England have been demonstrating Australia's new "collapsible" cricket team at Birmingham today. Previously, Australia have mostly provided a rigid team, or even an extending one. This latter model can often be elongated to as much as six or seven hundred runs. However, this collapsible version is something rather new.
England themselves of course, have often given their opponents a collapsible team in the past, and generally have one standing by just in case. England captain, Andrew Strauss was keen to see how the Aussie version compares with their own. Strauss said today, "We were delighted to have the chance to test the new collapsible Australian team this morning. It works very well, and is ideally suited to our purpose."
He was asked if it was difficult to use.
"Not really. You do need to apply pressure in the right areas to make it fold though."
So, have England got the hang of it already?
"Well perhaps, but we feel it could have been collapsed to an even smaller size if we had held onto all of the catches. Catches are always crucial with these collapsible teams. Sometimes they are hard to reach, but if you don't hang on, there is always a risk that part of the team will spring back up and start to extend again."
The collapsible Australian team will be on show at Edgebaston for the next few days. England are then hoping to be given the opportunity to tour it around the country a bit, dismantling it before different audiences.
