Poms! Name your best Aussie side of the last 30 years!
I'll have:
Hayden
Langer
Ponting
Chappell G
AB
Tugga
Gilchrist
Warne
Merv
Lillee
McGrath
Picks itself, really. The only sticking point is the first change bowler. Bung is too carp against England for consideration. McDermott blew hot and cold. Gillespie was very handy but I picked Merv in the end for his huge roles in the 1989 and 1993 Ashes, and because he always seemed to be chipping in with three good wickets.

Alderman for Hughes surely. I'd also have Healy for Gilly.

Certainly Alderman. But Gilly wasn't that bad a keeper

Mark Waugh v England- 29 tests, 2204 runs at an average of 50.09 with 6 hundreds. Also, 14 wickets at 37.07, and yes, his brilliant fielding.
I think he's worth a spot.

I was talking about the Pom at mid-on accepting his lollipops after Kjr cruised to an effortless thirty odd.

Should these teams be selected based on performance in ashes series? Or are they based on all cricket?

Since 1979
Hayden
Taylor
Ponting
G.Chappell
Border
S.Waugh
Healy
Warne
Lillee
Thomson
McGrath
Symonds as 12th man for reserve fielding duties
Alderman instead of Thomson if we are only allowed to consider performances since 1979 (rather than career acheivement).
It's a shame not to have spots for Mark Waugh, Doug Walters and Dean Jones. I suppose Ian Chappell pushes for a spot too.
A year ago Bobby Simpson would have got a spot.

I was thinking all teams, nece ommitting Clem. of course, he'd be a must in a series in England. Who would get the new ball, from Clem, DK and Hawaii?

M. Waugh

Border
Gilchrist
Warne
Lillee
McDermott
McGrath
Quality attacking L/R opening partnership, silky top order, gritty middle order.
Bowling-wise, Billy McSofty doesn't get enough of a rap... he's pipped Fleming and Gillespie in my team.
The keeper issue is a no brainer, f*ck the extra 6 catches a year - the better batsman was so >>>>>> than the other that it took 0.01 of a second to choose him.

The quality of the batting line up down to 6 doesn't require a mid-40s average batsman at 7. The quality of the bowling line up requires the best wicket keeper available. Healy is the man. He was a good enough bat to do what is necesary from a number 7.

Phurt! Gilly wasn't that poor a keeper compared to Healy. He's another one that gets placed on a pedestal.

Only 2 changes from Dans line up - Gillespie was better than McD and i'd put Boon up to open just out of personal preference.

If Billy McSofty were to have had McG and Warne for the best part of his career he would've had much better results than he did have (which was pretty damned good anyway).
Jebus, he rarely gets a mention. He'd be India's best ever seamer.

Gilchrist was not in the same league as a keeper. If its a batsman you want then why not throw the gloves to Ponting. I'm sure he would catch most things that came his way.

No way in the world, Gilchrist was adept with the gloves if nothing higher. It in no way makes him tantamount to a fielder with flappy bits of leather on his hands.
