Ponting announces retirement from international Twenty20 Empty Ponting announces retirement from international Twenty20

Cric Aus release...

Australian captain Ricky Ponting today announced his retirement from international Twenty20 cricket.

Ponting will remain as captain of the Australian Test and one-day sides but will step away from the international Twenty20 format in an effort to prolong his playing career.

Ponting said:

“After much thought and careful consideration I have advised Cricket Australia of my decision to retire from international Twenty20 cricket.

“I have also spoken to Andrew Hilditch, Tim Nielsen and Michael Clarke and I feel this decision provides me the opportunity to prolong my Australian Test and one-day career, an opportunity I am extremely determined about.

“As I said after the fifth Test in London, I am hoping to continue playing Test cricket for as long as possible and retiring from the Twenty20 format gives me the best chance of doing this.

“I will now have set periods of rest throughout the Australian summer and while touring which I feel will be very beneficial.

“While I will no longer be available for Australian Twenty20 cricket, I look forward to playing with Tasmania’s KFC Big Bash team where possible and to fulfilling my contract with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.”

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said:

“We are very supportive of the decision Ricky has made and understanding of the reasons behind it.

“Needless to say he will be a huge loss to the Twenty20 side but it does present opportunities for the other players and leaders within Australian cricket to gain further experience.

“While we have not seen much of Ricky in Australia’s Twenty20 matches in recent times, his innings in the first ever Twenty20 International against New Zealand at Auckland was probably the best innings I have ever seen in the Twenty20 form of the game.”

A formal decision regarding Ponting’s replacement as captain of the Twenty20 side will be made later in the year.

Australia’s next Twenty20 International will be held on 5 February, 2010 when Australia takes on Pakistan at the MCG.

It's a start.

Pah, he's only played 1 or 2 international T20's in the last 2 years anyway.

Besides his 98 not out in the first t20i, he's done nothing in that form of the game.

Clarke is even worse in international T20's. Strike rate of only 102 (poor for that form of the game) with an average of 19 and no 50's.

Shoulder. "tap, tap tap,". Now if he could only find a decent skipper for the test team. Anyone says Clarke I'll hunt you down and kill you.

As I've said before. He was a shithouse batsman but a great captain (not that he should have been allowed to do it).

If someone wants to put TTF on the sidelines as non-playing captain you'll get no disagreement from this tag.

I've said for a while we may as well make YT the T20 captain and keep the real cricketers for real cricket.

Besides the fact that his name starts with W A R N E, why is Warner's spot so cast in stone?

Lets get this straight. Punter wants to retire from playing T20 nternationals but has no qualms playing 2 months of fatigue inducing, demanding and tiring IPL T20s. He doesn't mind a gruelling scheduling of a crap event, that has caused extreme injuries or increased injury or wear and tear of some very fine players [Sachin, Zaheer, Sehwag, Steyn, Flintoff, KP etc]?

One would have thought skipping IPL would have been the best way to rest well and stay niggle free. Wouldn't an injury suffered in a 2 months non-stop marathon event risk a far serious injury that could later put him out of the whole season of tests like was the case with some of the above named players? How is playing IPL anyways even going to help prolong his test career? Given the fact that people who are no longer interested in playing test cricket are choosing to play IPL instead?

Also to speak relatively, I would never skip any kind of national duty for money, no matter which line of work. IF I were ever any in such kind of a situation relatively speaking!
